I’m just getting into Buffy about to start season 2. I can’t believe there still an active forum.
Well, lucky you! We're all very jealous that you get to watch Buffy for the first time. 😉

How did you discover the show? Friends? And let us know your thoughts as you continue watching!

Welcome.

I think our Buffy forum is still active because BtVS is ironically deep, it has rich themes & great storylines, writing and characters. It's very late 90's/early 00's but it's still very timeless. And it's very heartfelt. It's been my go-to comfort for over 20 years now which is crazy and I can't even believe it either but here we are. Proof that it's timeless is how well it's stood the test of time and only expanded in fandom and lore.

There's still much to unpack with the series, and things that you might not even notice until years later.

But there's a balance to things too. Whilst I will always champion the show and it will remain one of my favourites, I will also be the first to criticise it for it's faults, and there are a number of them.

And you should . Shows that you care by pointing out it flaws. It like being a good friend who points out what you think they doing wrong so they can do better.

Well, I just started reading Rose McGowan’s book ”Brave” and according to her people who spend time discussing tv-shows online like this… are in a cult.

So, welcome to the cult, I guess. And to the rest of you… you can check in, but you can never leave ;)

Hot damn!! I have often lamented not being in a cult and now I just learned I've been in one this whole time. Somehow it's not as fun as I envisioned cult life to be. Sad face emoji.

Cult life is what you make it, be more aggresive in your beliefs ;)

For starters, if this boards wasn't here you be writing in a blank page, mind you the nice folk at Black Thorn would still support any member regardless of there being a Buffy-Boards.com
That is partly for Slayer boy's benefit for when time comes to decide if to join a house and which house to join.

I wonder what she makes of sports...where a bunch of people gather watching/discussing something they like.

What a really, really odd thing of her to say.

To be fair to her, she grew up in a cult (Children of God) and says that she "sees cults everywhere", which I guess I understand. It's a mindset she is primed for.
But she is also pretty odd.

You'd probably say some political parties are more cult-like, rather than a bunch of people bonding over a TV show. 😋

At least generally speaking, cults don't tolerate all the different factions and splits of dogma (what that mean, shipping drama, etc), and cult leaders also tell people how to live whereas we'd laugh (best case scenario) at each other and the mods if they tried to tell us how to live our personal lives (who we could date, how we'd deal with our families, etc). We don't even actively recruit. Or even send money for the board the same way we would to say Netflix.

And think how much crap we give many involved in the making of our shows, including Joss Whedon. That would never be allowed in a cult, not even talking behind the cult leader's back.

I think she has confused cults with obsession. While some people can be very domineering or abuse their authority (in active or passive aggressive ways), some cliquish and butt kissing behavior is inevitable, that goes on about everywhere off and online, and I wouldn't call it a cult.
