I'm 33, and I've just started to read fan-fic for the very first time in my life.

Of course, it was Buffy fic that I started with, since its probably my favourite TV show (along with Angel).

I've only read a couple of stories, but, already I have fallen in love with fan-fic!

The main reason is that I know the characters so well. For this reason, I can imagine the fic really easily as though it were real in my mind when I'm reading it, and this makes it so authentic, fun and believable. Like, I can almost "hear" the actors' voices when they speak their lines. This makes it a lot more powerful than reading your everyday fiction or other books with characters that you do not know about or are familiar with.

When reading, it just seems to help a lot more if you actually know the characters to begin with. That's why I also enjoy reading autobiographies of people that inspire me, I respect or admire. If I already know a lot about them, it makes it that much more fun to read their life story because based on your understanding of them you can relate to what they're depicting a lot more easily and with a greater level of enjoyment.

Another thing that I'm impressed with in relation to fan-fic is the scope for variety. For instance, yes, Buffy fic is about characters that I like a lot, but the scope for variety in terms of what any given author brings to the table is wonderful. Each piece of fic definitely has its own very distinctive character and style. Some pieces, for example, that I have read have been almost dark and poetic while others are crackling with bubbly dialogue and humour. Its fun not knowing what style of fic you will encounter next!

PS. Thanks to Nightshade for turning me on to Buffy fan-fic, albeit unintentionally! (I just read one of her posts and was inspired). :)

Some folks love fanfic, some don’t touch it. Why or why don’t you read fanfic?
I haven't read any in a while, but used to read it pretty often. I enjoy reading well-written fan fic, especially stories in canon that fill in "missing scenes", so to speak. But I've also enjoyed some interesting AU stories as well. I read it because it's entertaining.

I don't read much lately, but I had my moments.
I have a personal theory about the whole reading-or-not-reading fanfics concept. It probably doesn't apply to everyone, but, for me, reading fanfics relies on fantasy and frustration.
I'm only interested in reading a fanfic on an event or a pairing (mostly) that never happened canonically on the show. Something for which the original work let us enough clues to see it coming, but for which the writers had never taken the risk to push it far enough.
I think it explains why I have a really hard time reading Buffyverse fanfics, while I can read Star Trek fanfics and, in another register, was an avid reader of kpop fanfics back in time (do not judge the young and not-so-innocent me from the past please!).
Coming back to BtVS, in terms of relationships, I'm not frustrated by it. The show had given us all the pairings I really wanted to see happening. And if I'm upset about some deaths (Lilah and Tara for instance), I don't think their respective relationships with Wesley and Willow would have evolved much more. Therefore : no need to read about them.

I read Buffy fanfic but it is harder and harder to find ones without Spike or Spike becoming Buffy's lover or a major character , One of my favourite's that seemed to disappeared from the the web , then it reappeared but under another authors name, I started to read it and it was the same story but as the chapters went by the writing become poorer , and like the show became more about Spike , which was not in the original story so I never finished it , but I do read Buffy cross overs and or stories about that include Faith OZ and of course the core four , just not Spike and not that keen on Angel either

I'm looking forward to reading some fanfic here when I get some more time. I haven't read much fanfic of any kind (and no Buffy), but I have stumbled into a couple forums and enjoyed reading a few. My biggest gripe was people not finishing the story, so I swore if I ever read any again, I would check for an ending first. My second biggest gripe was someone taking an established character and twisting them into a depiction of the author.

I used to read some Buffy and Faith romance fanfic years ago, and there was a lot of good ones. I feel like now, I just don't have time to read fanfic. I've got a lot of books to get caught up on, and I've discovered Dreame and Wattpad which are places for writers to publish their stories in a community. So, I just haven't gone back to reading fanfic. I went to FanFiction.net and under the categories TV Shows and it shows how many stories have been published for each show. Buffy ranks 6th.

Supernatural (126K)
Glee (108K)
Doctor Who (76.2K)
Sherlock (60.0K)
Once Upon a Time (53.0K)
Buffy: The Vampire Slayer (50.8K)
NCIS (41.7K)
Vampire Diaries (39.5K)
Criminal Minds (32.3K)
Stargate: SG-1 (30.3K)
Who is writing fanfic for shows like NCIS and Criminal Minds??? Here's the link if you want to check the numbers out, it's interesting stats FanFiction.net TV Shows

I guess one can make a fanfic out of anything. Especially if the only goal is to do a pairing story.

I often dislike reading others fan fics, I dislike it knowing that others members fan fics can be better than mine.

I love fan fic! I've read quite a bit, mostly Spuffy. I haven't read any in a while though, but not because I'm no longer interested. I've just been busy and just read less in general than I used to.

Why do I read it? Well, it's just fun to read about your favorite characters in new situations!

I tried to get into fanfic but I got a bit bored. Some did stand out though, i think there are a lot of incredibly talented writers on there too! I really don't like the 'spicy' ones, but apart from that some have really interesting plots and characters which i can appreciate!

Please note @LemonBanana,
I thought about referring to you as oh pretty one instead of, 'oh you' in my comment on the post #51, but I didn't want you to think I was grovelling for a nice answer, even though I was grovelling.
As I've said to many other members, nice ain't I? tee hee.

Ooh, now that is kind of you. Saying I'm a bit dirty makes the grubbiness seem quite a bit cleaner, thank you.

I've read a few but it seems pretty hard for me to find good ones. Most are either AU like all being human or are just for the sole purpose of making or promoting their pairing(s) of choice. I like the kind where it's like it could have been a real part of the series itself or at least a self contained novel like what we've seen released.

Bearing in mind that this site goes to all countries of the world, care to tell them what AU means?

Traditionally AU means fics where primarily Angel and/or Spike are humans and in high school with the other characters. Or where there the supernatural element like Buffy being the slayer and is just a normal girl.
