I almost added a bit of telling Andrew one comment about Harley Quinn (the jester outfit) would get him a session with my belt, but of course he would (he wouldn't be able to help himself, he says about anything that enters his head even more than Anya does), and then I'd have to wonder would he see a belt as a punishment...or a reward? 😛

(I don't know how it is in the UK where I think you're from, but I grew up in Texas. Corporeal punishments like whippings are not only allowed there, but encouraged, at least in the rural regions, and even the urban schools I went to made use of the paddle to keep kids in line. That said, Texas has taught me that corporeal punishment does NOT make kids act particularly better for the most part. But it was unpleasant enough that I was bemused by how popular things like that are for fun. It's like Chris in Family Guy who cries as he's being spanked by a neighbor and he cries out, "I can't believe Japanese businessmen pay good money for this!" 😀)

Actually I was one of the few who complemented him. And get used to that. Threads go from a simple question to a complex argument very quickly.
 
Just so I'm clear, I'm speaking tongue in cheek in this thread. Your love for Andrew doesn't bother me. We have Spike lovers, Anya lovers, Faith lovers, so loving Andrew doesn't seem so bad to me. And if people want to say he's annoying, so were Connor and Dawn for the most part, but they have their avid defenders, too. So it's about time someone gives Andrew some love. 🙂

That's a bit disconcerting...but now that you've said that, I think many people feel that way about certain characters as that would explain their reactions to those characters being discussed (and not just in this fandom), and also some articles I've read. I'm resolving now to try not to speak so harshly about the characters in the show, but I may forget. It's not my intent to hurt people when I can harshly criticize the show and characters at times. But I don't feel the same affinity for the characters that some do, that is I don't feel personally attacked if a character is harshly criticized, so it's hard for me to be aware (and remember) that others do. I'll argue over characters, but it's not personal for me. But that doesn't mean it's not personal to others (though some people get upset anytime someone disagrees, so it's hard to tell).

I like Andrew. I'm glad he's kinda an unofficial Scooby in the comics, especially in season 10.
Jonathan was still my favourite from The Trio, but Andrew was cool in season 7.

Unfortunately Andrew is a little divisive. This place is full of opinions, but nothing is ever personal. This is the power of the internet though, people do have opinions and will share them, as long as everyone remains respectful. 🙂

I like some of Andrew's lines in S7 and Storyteller is a fun episode, but otherwise I kinda feel his role is redundant, but if you love him @Triss then all power to you. 😉

I thought this was clearly an appreciation thread from the title?!

Andrew needs a character to bounce off from. In Season 6 this is Warren and in Season 7, it's Spike. However, Andrew's role is essentially he fancies someone and either they don't notice or they choose to ignore it. Andrew has no function outside of that. Andrew could be completely taken out of Season 7 and nothing would change.

Andrew worked in Season 6, however, I don't think they really knew what to do with him. Originally Tucker (the guy with the hellhounds in "The Prom") was supposed to be the third member of the trio alongside Jonathan and Warren but they couldn't get the actor or something hence why we got "Tucker's Brother". Because Andrew had now prior link to the scoobies outside of the Trio, unlike Warren and Jonathan, his main role was exclusive to the trio so without them, he's just a loose end floating about. This presents it's own problems. Andrew is neither bad enough (Warren) nor known enough to the audience (Jonathan) to kill off because the audience doesn't care about him enough. He's just "there" in terms of the trio because he's got neither the personality (Warren) nor the loveability (Jonathan) to make an impact.

Andrew's role in season 6 is to show that even the most mild-mannered of people can sleepwalk into evilness. Jonathan and Warren already had a history of doing the wrong thing, but Andrew was a clean skin, we had no expectations of him. We only knew he'd done wong because he told us he did, but we didn't see it (and it may have never happend and be one of Andrew's fantasies) He was shown to fall under Warren's influence, be easily lead, and really have no real views of his own. Andrew is the epitome of the follower and fatasist, and not in a good way 🙂

I think he's loveable... he's so emotional and sensitive and just wants to be accepted. I kind of like the fact that he lives in his own little world and doesn't serve much of a purpose. He is just Andrew, and nothing else. I like that. An outsider and a misfit with his head in the clouds. I find that cute.
