I actually watched The Vampire Diaries before Buffy, and the first thing I noticed when I watched Buffy was that Angel and Stefan are very similar characters, with similar backstories. I remember thinking, “So that’s who Stefan is based on!” I know I’m not the only one who’s noticed this. Like Angel, Stefan used to be evil until he ended up in a place where he wanted to atone for his past sins. Both vampires are quiet, introspective loners, and they both have to deal with the evil within them rearing it’s ugly head and ruining their relationships with the women they love.

What are your thoughts on Stefan and Angel? As a BTVS fan, I love Buffy a lot more than TVD, but personally, I think the actor for Stefan did a much better job playing the same kind of role. David Boreanaz has gotten much better as an actor (he’s so expressive in Bones), but throughout the first three seasons of Buffy, I felt his acting was a bit unpolished. It was his first acting job, and you could tell (unlike with Sarah Michelle Gellar, who’d been acting since childhood...so she was a pro from S1).

Are U serious the actor who played Stefan Salvatore is Paul Wesley...u cant call him the actor. And yea im a big fan of tvd and also btvs...i just love supernatural shows, and i think its true stefan and angel even look a bit alike with their hero hairdo and broodiness. botha them hot

I never really liked Vampire Diaries (BTvS and TVD are completely different shows, imo), but I did notice that Angel and Stefan were similar characters. David Boreanaz and Paul Wesley were both great actors, imo.

Not just angel and Stefan...but also Damon and spike...both of them have a character development and we're villains at some point of the show... They feel for the food girl and eventually became good for her.

Agreed.
There were similarities between the two for sure. Stefan had a bit of Edward Cullen in him too. Stefan/Edward had blood lust to fight, Stephan/Angel had sexual lust. I am sure there were a fair few bedroom window and front porch scenes. Stefan goes evil, uses the blood of his love, ends up in a coffin under water, falls for another blonde.

TVD is based on a book series that came out before BTVS did; that is where the character Stefan came from, not from Angel.

I think there are some similarities on the surface, ie brooding, journals, "good" guy with dark past, feeling guilt about his past....but I think when you really get to know that characters they are pretty different. Stefan exists in a much more grey area than Angel, he also doesn't seem to be living his life focused on redemption - he's content living in a better way than his ripper days.

But yeah, both TVD and BTVS have numerous cliches that make them similar.

The first Vampire Diaries book was published the same year the Buffy movie was filming.

While the Scoobies & Angel weren't in the semi-canon prequel, Buffy has a dark haired older love interest who probably inspired the creation of Angel's & Xander's characters. Many things from the movie were not just referenced but recreated on the show; Buffy wearing a black leather jacket with a white dress while killing a master vampire, Buffy's love interest leaving her for her own good, Buffy's Watcher telling her what he wanted to be when he was little.

Oliver Pike isn't anything like Angel, Spike or Xander. He has a personality more similar to Oz. He's a pretty standard '90s laid-back slacker archetype. He has ultra calm reactions to everything. He's not a mysterious stranger, flamboyant rebel or a class clown.

The only similarity to Xander besides the scholastic underachievement (but that's more like Oz just not showing up for school and facing not graduating at all, rather than Xander's actual struggles in learning in comparison to Oz testing as a genius) is the story of being pulled into the fight because his goofy best-friend Benny became a vampire. That aspect of The Harvest was actually ripped off of the 1992 movie.

But no, Pike isn't even the same archetype as any of Buffy's other love interests.

There are similarities, but overall Stefan stacks up poorly in comparison to Angel. A lot of his dialogue is far more cliche and hammy than Angel's (as is all of the Vampire Diaries dialogue). And while I will say that Paul Wesley was probably the best actor on his show, he does not compare to David Boreanez or most of the other Buffy/Angel actors. Which might sound a little harsh, but I think Buffy/Angel are some of the better cast shows in TV history, so it is not meant to be harsh. Even the actors that I would not classify as being very good, fit their own characters very well. hey They don't have much wiggle room outside of the show, but they were pretty right for this.
