Couples that never were

Buffy & Owen - they were cute together and eventually her closest friends were an integral part of her fighting evil (which is what she wanted to keep Owen away from...even though she agreed to let Willow & Xander help/work with her). He would've been great at research since he's a bookworm- Giles would love him; Owen the watcher in training. He lived for the excitement and action too. They could've had him last a bit longer in s1 anyway and maybe even into s2 have Angelus kill him to really hurt Buffy even more.

I really liked Owen. I understand why Buffy felt uncomfortable with continuing to see him, not just because he would get himself hurt as she says, but also because she would always wonder if it was her that he liked or just the excitement. That said, I think he was a good guy, and it could have been interesting to keep him as a background/supporting character for the first season at least.

Yeah but he was really into her well before he had any inkling she was a vampire slayer.

That's fair, and I agree with you, but I don't think that logic would have stopped Buffy from feeling that it might be the reason he stayed even if it wasn't the reason he arrived. And she wouldn't be wrong to wonder, because she wouldn't really know, not for a fact. She could only draw inferences based on his actions.

She had a different baseline for a "healthy" reaction to what she does in Xander and Willow. They want to help her, but not out of a desire for excitement. They'd rather not have the excitement. It (rightfully) scares them. They just feel it's the right thing to do, and they feel loyalty to her because she saved their lives and they've become friends as a result. Owen's reaction stood in contrast to that and it (rightfully) concerned her. She might have been wrong, but she wasn't wrong to be concerned, in my opinion.

I agree with this... I liked Owen and would have loved for him to become part of the Scoobies! Even if Buffy didn't date him, like you said, he could have been excellent for helping Giles research.

Gunn & Gwen

By far one of my favorite pairings in the Buffyverse, even with the little we got of them.

Gunn & Faith

Spike & Anya

Giles & Anya

Riley & Willow

Wesley & Fred

Doyle & Cordy

Warren & Amy

I dont know why but they strike me as a good match. 🤣

Buffy & Parker
Clearly in an alternate universe where Parker was not a player.

What’s with the Willow & Riley?! Horrible pairing imo

I forgot about Gunn and Gwen! Yes, that would have been an amazing pairing!
Okay hear me out …

Kathy & Clem- Sure Kathy was sucking Buffy’s soul but she just wanted to get an education and live life outside whatever hell dimension she’s from. I feel like her personality (if she wasn’t like actually evil) would bounce off of Clem so well.

Glory & Warren- after Warren makes April & the Buffybot in s5, Glory recruits him as her human minion to help her manufacture the altar tower and to fight Buffy; he (a misogynist) is threatened by her strong boss b!tvh energy but they share a violent relationship before she ends up killing him and he is never in s6. Willow still goes dark in s6 only without Tara dying; she just basically overdoses on bad magic thanks to Amy & Rack. Tara is the one to bring Willow back to normal not Xander.

Harmony & Lorne— I always felt like Lorne was gay coded (& I love it bc gays are so demonized in society) but I loved the dynamic between these two & I feel like they could’ve been a power couple or duo anyway without it being sexual at all. A lavender marriage if you will.

Other total fantasy, that I don’t think would actually make a good couple or could’ve/should’ve been but I’d still love to see play out…

Buffy & Groo- how jealous Angel would be
Willow & Fred- 2 peas in a pod
Spike & Angel- so hot- who lands on top?
Lilah & Angel - hot chemistry
Nina & Oz- obviously
Olivia & Giles- she should’ve stayed
Amy & Warren (though there is the season 8 deal which is technically canon)

Even Doug Petrie talked about the Riley/Willow chemistry on The Initiative DVD Commentary

I don't know if I would want to see them together, but I think they did have chemistry. He got along with Willow and Xander both really well, and played off both greaet, Xander like a brother and Willow as a friend. So it's not like they didn't have something to work with.

Honestly, I would have liked to see more of Riley and the Scooby Gang. I think he was much better with them than he was with Buffy (which I do think comes down to Buffy more than him, her being more withdrawn than she was in her relationship with Angel; I think she loved him, but I don't think she was excited by him, which was their relationship's downfall, him being too safe for her.)

My Top Ten......

Willow and Anya
Willow and Riley
Parker and Pre-Chip Spike
Angel and Faith
Buffy and Xander (The Original Designated Love Interest)
Cordy and Oz
Buffy and Oz
Vamp Harmony and Parker
Buffy and Faith
@Joan the Vampire Slayer - Parker and Spike had all the potential in the universe. Think about their meet-cute, Spike hauling the half dead human out of the party. The sexy subtext to their hostile introduction. Spike and Parker's aching glances as Spike flees a self-righteous Buffy......

I would totally ship Fuffy is I wasn't so obsessed with Spuffy, lol.
Spike and Giles. 😀

Hey, I can make a good argument for it in S4!

It's the spin-off we never got! They were so good together.

Joan the Vampire Slayer Th issue with Joyce/Giles is I think Joyce somewhat resented Giles for being her Watcher, and felt he was somehow responsible for putting her in danger.

I mostly agree with you - she lashes out at him in s3, but I feel like that was more about Joyce projecting after Buffy had left town due to the events of s2. She needed someone to blame. Giles didn't make her a Slayer. He didn't pluck her from the crowd.

Afterwards, I don't think she resented Giles (*wink wink*) and there was room for them to perhaps form a romantic relationship.

That said, even though her time was brief in the series, I really liked Giles with Olivia. Wish she had stuck around longer!

And on another note, this thread is reminding me of my travels through BTVS fic and coming across some....interesting pairings. 😂

Anya and Giles should have gone legit. Then have Anya back up the stevedore comment Joyce made and put all the other men to shame.
Giles was a hottie! Ptobably b/c he was closer to my age than most of the teen cast - but I noticed him right off. Especially when he went Ripper and whenever the guitar man came to the fore. Joyce wasnt so bad either. mmm... Yummy!
EDIT @NotASlayer nooo. Not into mother figures because incest is SO not my thing ;-P But, she is cute. Also, less than a decade older than me, so not really mum aged! I am berrry berrry owlde

The term is British, so you may not have heard it before. My favourite definition is this: A British middle class way of saying milf. 😀

I'm not sure about the rest of those pairings, but Lilah and Lindsey could have been an interesting couple, I think. They would have had a very passionate, sarcastic relationship.
Lilah and Lindsey are strong personalities and competitive (what makes them good lawyers) and honestly I think they would have clashed as a couple. Also no way that would have been more interesting with what we got with Lilah and Wesley.

Also. I always thought Lindsey was closeted gay and in love with Angel. I'm very surprised no one has mentioned Lindsey/Angel yet.

Yes, it would have been a doomed relationship in the long run, but I think it could have been entertaining to watch.

Oh, I agree, Joanie. I wasn't weighing them against each other or stating a preference over what we got. Just observing possibilities.

Also. I always thought Lindsey was closeted gay and in love with Angel. I'm very surprised no one has mentioned Lindsey/Angel yet.

I don't see that. I think he's obsessed with Angel, attached to him, but I don't think it's sexual or romantic anymore than Batman and the Joker (and I know there are people who say that as well, but as a lifelong Batman fan, I have to say that they're wrong.)

I think he sees Angel as an idealized version of what he could be (he has morals and principles, which we see on many occasions, such as saving the oracle children in "Blind Date," and we know that his only reason for compromising them is his traumatic upbringing and his fear of being powerless.) I think he has anger at Angel for so often defeating him in costly ways, gaining him the scrutiny of the Senior Partners, losing him his hand, etc. I think he is jealous of him, viewing him as the reason that he lost Darla, even though she never could have loved him to begin with.

I just don't see it as romantic or sexual in nature. I think it's far more complicated than that. He is the golden boy, the favored son of Holland Manners at the L.A. branch, and Angel is the primary focus of both Manners and the branch as a whole. It established a strong antagonism between them, as well as a singular attention, to begin with. After repeated failures against and losses to Angel (such as the death of Russell Winters), gaining him disappointment and reprimand from his mentor/father figure (Manners), this turned to anger and resentment (especially after the loss of his hand.)

When he fell for the human Darla, only for her to go running back to Angel, this antagonism took on a far more personal angle, focusing on Angel as the reason for every one of his failures and shortcomings, and yet jealous of him, both because Darla loved him and because he had the strength to hold his principles through suffering, while Lindsey's own principles were often violated by his work, which he performs out of a fear of being the victim that his father was. I think their relationship is, in a way, brotherly, though full of resentment. Some brothers don't get along, as I'm sure we all know.

That's just my read on it. For what it's worth.
