Darla was Angel's true love

Darla damned Angel as soon as she entered his life; how does that indicate any kind of 'true love'? How does one define true love?

Look, I very much like the dynamic between Angel and Darla- its very twisted and interesting (even if one considers Angel and Angelus as distinct entities) and leads to good stories, but I don't really see 'romantic' love there.
Weird co-dependance? Sure, seems to be a thing with immortals that they fixate on an individual for ever and ever even if the other person hates them, has tried to kill them or represents everything they stand against.

Hot take; Angel does not have a true love, his existence as a champion of the higher powers puts him beyond such petty considerations as mere romantic entanglement. He is driven by higher mythic guiding principals of atonement, redemption, the eternal struggle between good and evil.

Another hot take; Darla was not a very good person, either with or without a soul and her one good, redeeming act was to sacrifice herself for her son.

Nah. Dru explained that what vampires call "love" isn't normal, healthy, human love - as depicted, it seems more like ownership of a thing - and, according to the Judge, Angelus lacked any essence of humanity. As Angelus, he literally couldn't love Darla.

As Angel, with a soul, he was capable of feeling something from her, but what he felt was both positive and negative, and the negative was enough stronger than the positive that he was able to stake her the first time. Yes, their bond may have been strengthened in Angel when she started being affected by a soul too, but that was always going to be a fleeting thing.

Look, the soul canon has some inconsistencies, but Angelus being utterly inhuman and incapable of love, if not outright disgusted by the concept, is not one of them.

Ignoring whether a being without a soul can love or not, Darla is not Angel's true love. At best, she would be Angelus's.

Disagree. I think it was Buffy! He would give up his left fang to hold her hand.

But he would not be human
It is clear that Angel was bonded to Darla - even when Darla was wholly owned by The Master. It was only when she almost killed Joyce & tried to kill Buffy that Angel hesitantly killed her.

Angel even tried to stay with Darla after her got his soul, until *she* rejected his human 'weakness.'

Angelus was bonded to Darla. He gave up his life as Liam for her. He became the monster she wanted. He followed her obsessively for hundreds of years through multiple abandonments.

Neither attachment was remotely healthy but it is Darla, not Buffy whom Angel was prepared to die for in the trials.

He nearly got his whole team killed in his obsession over Darla.

When Buffy was scheduled to die at the hands of the Master, Angel went off to mourn and feel sorry for himself. He did not take any initiative to go fight by her side.
  • It was Giles who was prepared to go and die in her place until Buffy stopped him.
  • It was untrained, physically weak Xander who had the balls to go up against TWO master vampires (Angel AND The Master) in order to save Buffy in the Master's lair. Xander saved her. Given the opening hellmouth, it is likely Xander saved the world by saving Buffy.
Angel experienced the bliss of someone truly LOVING HIM. At no other time did anyone love him the way Buffy did. I do believe that was a trancendent experience.

Yet when he lost his soul, he could not love her at all because his love was transactional. Only valid with the soul. And yet when the soul came back, he still left instead of trying ANYTHING to try to keep his soul.

He could not give up being a vampire to be with her. He had one day as a human and it was too much weakness for him. He threw it back even though being human was what he said he wanted and Buffy was overjoyed to have human Angel. He had the Riley problem. He could not handle being a 'mere' human.

I don't believe he loved her back. True love requires sacrifice. He cared. He felt loved. Not the same as loving which requires doing FOR your loved one. Love is more than a feeling. Love is an action.

Love is dying for your sister and the world.
Love is dying for the woman you love and the world.

Buffy's love was a unique experience, but not enough to capture the whole (Angelus as well) person.

His father rejected him. For centuries he carried the wound that he would never please father. I think he did not attach well because he was not allowed to attach to his parents.

Darla rejected him when he got the soul and abandoned him repeatedly over the years whenever he became inconvenient. Yet he kept caring about her.

I don't believe Angel had normal "attachment" to anyone. The closest was Darla. Even that was very obsessional.

I dont believe Angel or Liam or Angelus had true love. I believe that the strongest bond he had was to Darla.

He gave up his life as Liam for her.
He didn't give up his life as Liam for her, because first, he didn't know he was about to die by a vampire, and second, he didn't know her. He was excited by what that attractive and worldly lady could offer him.

Neither attachment was remotely healthy but it is Darla, not Buffy whom Angel was prepared to die for in the trials.
Well, yes, but after that, he would bery much die for Buffy if the situation required it. Remember, he wanted to wear the amulet and it was her choice that he didn't. So I've no doubt he would've done the trials for her.

You make some excellent points about his relationship with Buffy, though I will have to think about it some more. I would definitely say Darla was someone he was deeply bonded to, souled or unsouled. Without a soul, he continued to follow Darla slavishly, even after she abandoned him in a barn to save herself. With a soul, he still had complex feelings about her, though I'm not sure I would call it love.

Love is being 16 years old and walking alone into a known trap to try to be the ONLY THING between a monster and the end of the world. She went instead of Giles knowing she would die. That was who Buffy was.

I call it obsession. Toxic atttachment. Addiction. Not sure it is love either. Just that it is his primary and enduring attachment - before, during & after Buffy.

Buffy *was* his grand romance. Buffy was the only time he felt perfectly loved.

Darla was his enduring attachment, attraction, obsession.

Darla was his sire which means she was the first to introduce him to the world as a creature of the night. As the term "sire" suggests, it is a position of dominance over whomever was turned. In this sense, Angel was connected to Darla in every way, including parenthood. And Drusilla was always going to be attracted to Angel. And Spike was always going to take care of Drusilla.

A am somewhat mystified by the idea that Buffy was his true love. He never showed any sign of excitement when she was around. When Buffy died temporarily at the end of Season 1, he did not seem to be all that upset. Maybe the idea that other people die but he had lasted 240 years made him desensitized to any concern about any one individual - only the immortal could keep him occupied and Darla was exactly that.
