When I watch a show where I like the characters, I want to see them be them. In this season besides the Jasmine Shiny Happy people arc, we have an amnesia ep, Cordy possessed, the Angel affected by the casino ep, the Angel is turned into Angelus arc. It's to much to me
Did season 4 spend to much time with the characters acting out of character?

Perhaps they were thinking of the reality (in their world) that at any time and under any circumstances, anything can happen. They were also running out of new stories to tell and this was their way of coming up with episodes that had not been seen yet. It is difficult to keep a stable of writers producing unless they have something new to contend with.

You know, you could say, that Joss was secretly making Rent, that slowly transforming his likeable characters into hollow parodies of their inner children before they died of Vampire AIDS, something, something Media criticism, and I have a Onion AV Club Weekly column. But no, I don't think anyone really planned for Cordelia's last stand to be a Demon possessed shell without any volition of her own. It's just how the dice fell, with the series early cancelation.
