Discussion of 1.01 "Welcome To The Hellmouth" - Aired 3/10/1997 (WB-US)

season 1 Buffy is very very beautiful!!!i also like her until season 4...but i think in season 5...it's not that she is very thin...cause SMG has a petit figure(which i admire by the way)...i think that after season 5 maybe her schedule was too harsh...and she was getting tired...but i always like Buffy!!!tired or not still beautiful!

Love this episode. It's nice to go back and watch the beginning after watching the entire series. The way SMG delivers her lines here, she sounds way girlish, but I guess that's expected since Buffy was 16. Really funny.

David looks really young here, it's pretty funny. His personality seems a bit different in the first few episodes from the Angel we've grown to love, but none-the-less, for the pilot it's good. It got me hooked, I can say that much.

Favorite parts of this episode is the parts with Carmine Giovinazzo
He plays the boy that gets attacked in the beginning scene
and he falls out of the locker

I love him <3

yeah i have to agree with you , i love that scene as well

I love this episode. Usually with some other shows, I catch them mid season & get hooked but with Buffy, I did get to see this episode first & I immediately fell in love with it. I love the metaphor when Buffy opens her trunk & reveals that everything is not what it seems to be on the surface. That is one of my favorite scenes from this episode & from season one.

Just re-watched it after having now seen it for a few years. Compared to some of the later episodes, there really was no way to tell that the series was going to become a world wide phenomenon. I had forgotten about how insecure many of the characters were in the old days. I especially like Angel's first scene. Even though we didn't know then he's a vampire, looking back, all the clues are there.

I'm re watching the entire series.

This episode wasn't the greatest but it still hooks you.

Things that irked me:

Buffy's clothes. Knee-length boots aren't a practical choice for a Slayer!

Angel's clothes: Awful. I'm glad to know they get better later on.

They are all so young! And poor Jesse who lasted two eps. Was this planed by the writers? I've seen Eric Balfour in other things most recently 24.

8/10. :biggrin3:

Im re-watching buffy too, It used to be my fav show but its not anymore, but still one of my fav shows

Everytime I watch this I always think: oh my, they look SO young! It fills my heart with joy to think that this is episode where it all began. Xander and Willow helping Buffy since the beginning, Giles being so british all the time, mystery Angel....all their bonds forming and innocence everywhere. Beautiful.

I am as many others re-watching the show. These are my thoughts about it. Darla is so young and cute, which is kinda funny since vampires are not suppose to age. She is kinda boring and portraited as more stupid and giggly then in later episodes of btvs and angel. OMG-I love 1st season Willow, she`s so cute but not in a childish way but in a smart realistic way. I absolutely adore her. Everybody but Willow seems to want to be so cool, but Willow is just nice, nerdy and cute-the way I like her. I find it interesting that Joss chose to go with the cool girl as the superhero, since traditional superherostoryline depicts that it should be the geeky guy who turns in to the superhero. But I guess it`s the same kind of transformation, geeky guys aren`t supposed to be superheroes and cool girls aren`t supposed to be superheroes. Though personally I rather would have wanted to see Willow as the superhero. Giles is boring and grumpy as usual. Cordy is absolutely bitchy, funny, fabulous. I really like her in Buffy but not in Angel. I really like season 1 and season 5 the best. By the way does anyone know if there is any truth to the fact that I heard that Julie Benz also auditioned for the role of Buffy? I like season 1 because it has more of a horrorfeel to it, which more and more as Buffy goes on fades away. I don`t like Angel at all in the future when he is all grumpy and manly, big and boring. But here he is thin, nice and kinda cute. I really like the velvet jacket, and if he has eye shadow, good for him 🙂 Xander is boring as always and doesn`t listen to Buffy when she tells him to go home. Can he be more annoying? My darling Harmony is introduced and I thought she was going to be bitchy in Buffy, but she is supercute, though she always gets bossed around, this time by Cordy. (Maybe Xander was in love with Jesse, he did seem profoundly sad when he got killed and he kicks the box 😉 Buffy saves Cordy from being bitten in the end and that scene is really cool. A vampire`s head gets chopped off which is a killingtechnique which gets more or less forgotten in the future (at least that is what I remember).
Great quotes:
It`s all coming together-though I really wish it weren`t (Giles to Willow)
-There`s something you forgot about-Sunshine
-It`s in about nine hours you moron (Buffy to Luke before she stakes him)
As conclusion; I really love the episode, boring though if it is true what someone wrote about cutifying Willow. In the first part she wears pants then a dress.

Cordy was great on both shows, but better on ANGEL
Welcome to the Hellmouth is just a perfect first ep. Easily the best first ep of any show I've seen, in the way it sets up the characters and the feel and metaphorical aspect of the show is shown really well from the get go.

I would definitely agree with that 🙂 Fantastic opening episode and still remains my favourite season opener. Ah the nostalgia for that episode. Reminds me so much of the first time I saw it as a kid and instantly falling in love with "the pretty Buffy lady"lol. Ah I miss those days but thanks to Buffy it does help bring them a little closer. I would give this episode probably a solid 8.5/10.

Love this episode! great series opening. I just wish Buffy would have kept her early-in-the-show sense of humor.

This is a fantastic episode. It had to be, to suck people in. The humour is great and the characters are amazing. My only problem is that the first vamp we were introduced to is Darla and I don't find her creepy at all. Luke was kind of scary though, he worked for the last scene. I love the balcony scene between Giles and Buffy and Willow is adorable in this episode.
