Discussion of 3.05 "Homecoming" - Aired 3/11/1998 (WB-US)

Faith must really like Buffy to mess with Scott Hope like that. Too bad that's going to change.

Cordelia says she loves Xander, though considers the possibility that it's temporary insanity. Though in retrospect, I really don't like how Buffy and Angel (the shows) portray romance. Almost all of it seems so forced, and I think I hadn't noticed it much because I focus more on the supernatural and horror elements as well as general witty dialog. I suppose shippers can stand anything as long as it gives them what they want.

Heh, Cordelia trying to get the geek vote by claiming she knows the Vulcan "death grip." At least she's trying! 😀

Offhand, this seems the first time Cordelia got angry at being insulted (when Buffy called her a vapid whore), and interesting to see the Scoobies flocking around Cordelia, and when Buffy and Cordelia are yelling insults at each other Xander pulls Cordelia away.

But my favorite scene with Cordelia is in this episode, and one of the reasons I love the character. And until the conflict between Cordelia and Buffy, Cordelia has been one of the Scoobies this season (as opposed to someone who gets pulled in), even smiling kindly at Willow as Willow hyperventilates about leaving campus as a senior in an earlier episode (something a younger Cordelia would've mocked her for).

ETA: it does look as if Trick was grabbed by 2 cops, neither of which was the one that Snyder talked to more than once, which makes me wonder how many cops are in on it (and what else they're into).

Or maybe people have different tastes and legitimately enjoy things you find forced? Crazy, I know. 🙂

Though there is certainly subtext with Faith's feelings for Buffy, I think Faith felt a kinship with Buffy perhaps like that of a sister. So when Faith saw Scott, she got all protective of Buffy.

I think it all depends on the ship. For me, Sprusilla felt natural (though it was technically a pre-existing relationship), whereas Spuffy was forced and was very damaging to both characters.

Tillow was a relationship that felt like it developed naturally whereas Woz was a little forced (because they did bugger all with Oz outside of being WIllow's boyfriend).

Xanya seemed more of a natural fit than Cander.

Bangel was better developed than Briley (but Briley was poisoned by Season 5).

Some relationships work better than others and a big part of that is the actors chemistry with each other and the type of chemistry. Some characters work better in a non-romantic capacity with others.

That's how I meant it about Faith, not "fuffy"
Clarification on my statement how a lot of it seems forced: I meant on how it starts, whether it's Xander and Cordelia in the basement or Xander and Willow suddenly in lust with each other out of the blue. I actually love the Cander, but how it started seemed more played for laughs rather than something I could take seriously, and then Xander with Willow (which will end Cander) just cringeworthy, and that's true of a lot of the romances for me. But once it's happening then the chemistry can be quite real to me.

Still, I'm not obsessed with relationships (my own or others), and I've always preferred vampires as creatures of nightmares rather than romantic figures, all of which is unusual so it probably can't help but look different to me.

Fun episode : It's Slayerfest 1998

- Cordelia vs Buffy - They are funny I love the competition, Buffy's speech to Cordy plus at the end they thought they were winners but they lose by 2 girls, they look on their faces lol.
- Mr Trick - I love Mr Trick, he's fun he makes me laugh when he asks to the demon what kind of demon he is.
- Giles - He's funny at the Bronze when he makes a joke about needing Buffy because of some danger, I love his smile.
- Faith - Faith had a lttle revenge on Scott (yes).
- Slayerfest - It's good to see Gorch and some other enemies.
- The Mayor - He appears for the first time and I'm afraid of him in that scene after the look on the deputy Allan.
- Bangel - also love Bangel.
- Willow & Xander - I love how petty they are at the Bronze.

Also about Willow & Xander at the end when the couples Woz & Cander broken up because of X & W, after that then suddenly the lust is gone.

If Lyle knew that Cordelia wasn't a slayer, he wouldn't have walked off like he did.

I didn't like Cordelia's behavior in this episode.

I didn't like Xander&Willow kissing each other. They were with other people.

I think that WIllow shouldn't have went along with Cordelia because of Xander. It was OOC of her. Oz should've given her his input.

I did like Faith's payback on Scott.

My impression is that Willow helped Cordelia out of guilt...but then perhaps Oz should've made an observation...
Just watched this on the Rewatch. Its enjoyable but I wouldn't call it great though I'm 50/50 on calling it good.
Anyway The Good:
How they got rid of the Scott Hope character was hilariously brilliant.
Seeing Mr Trick in action and of course seeing the Mayor for the first time.
Some great bits of dialogue which Greenwalt isn't really known for.
Willow and Xander kissing (I was always a Wander fan)
Buffy and her characterisation.
The Double winner ending 😄

That said the bad stands out for me a lot :
Wander , like I said I'm a fan and it was done simply to break up Cordy amd Xander so she can do Ats no other reason.
Cordelia not telling Buffy about the Photograph. There was no reason for her not to do that other than plot convenience.
How Cordy behaves during the Slayerfest is really dumb and spends most of it just screaming for help. For a so called feminist show that was a common trope used for Cordy on both Buffy and Angel and it grates me.
The pose of Buffy looking pretty with a shotgun rifle could be straight out of an NRA commercial 😐
The Germans . They don't even have names they are just Ze Germans, why do they want to kill Buffy, who knows or who cares. Why did they decide to shoot each other (I get the intention before someone says the obvious but the execution was badly done) again who knows or who cares they are dead anyway. Though people wandering around a US school with Assault Rifles could not be shown today.
The message I took at the end is that looking pretty and doing Homecoming is really important for girls. Urmm ok 😕

All in all I give it 7/10, it was enjoyable but I'm not prepared to go higher.

I like it. But the first time I watched it I coudn’t Get myself to understand the appeal of homecoming.. you know becoming the queen... we don’t have that in France in high school. Maybe we miss something.

I hate the Xillow affair.

I think it needed to happen (in that Willow and Xander needed to resolve their romantic feelings for each other, Willow especially) however the timing of it sucked since they were both in relationships.

I think of it as crappy ass writing.

It certainly doesn't make Xander look good, especially when he's in a relationship. He's very much like a child with a toy. When he has chance to play with the toy, he doesn't want it, but the moment someone else picks the toy up and is playing with it, he wants it.

He ignored her for 4 other girls, thinking of her as his little sis.

It's stupid.
Agreed . Xander didn't care about Willow feelings . If he did he would have been happy for Willow.
But he went after her just because he wanted her to be his even thought he didn't want to date her .
He just didn't want to share her .

In Anne, he was looking forward to seeing Cordelia rather than wanting a make out session with Willow. He was more invested in Cordelia then.
