Discussion of 8.05 "The Chain" - Released 7/25/07 (Dark Horse)

No posts on this ep yet? Launching into my first reading once again...

-I still don't understand the whole anti-slayer attitude of the world. They are saving humanity from being sucked into hell, destroyed, being eaten, etc. and they're getting all this hate? Then again, that military organization is probably throwing all kinds of propaganda out to the public.
-I'm sad already after the first page. 🙁
-Uh, since when is there a Tinkerbell in Slayerville??
-Ok, I don't get why the schoolgirl is yanked from the picnic table. Or the segue to Giles.
-Now it makes more sense. I do hope that commercial wasn't real!! Ooo, is that Olivia?!
-I don't get the whole "sending a Buffy to the underworld" plan. She's just supposed to try to keep Yamenh and friends occupied so they don't come up earthside? The slug and fairies might be getting a little too out there for me...

Ok. I think I get it now, but a little more explanation of the war going on in this netherworld would have been nice! Interesting how they shed kind of a negative light on Buffy's army; they took a girl to use for their agenda, she got caught up in it and the power, tried to do her best and was killed. She will never received recognition and the world won't know her name for the sacrifices she made. Heavy story, but I really enjoyed this episode.

What is up with the Fairy??? That just seemed so not Buffy, that would be more welcomed in 'Charmed' ??
I thought it was a good little story though, quite touching really and sad 🙂

Continuing with my re-read, first time since it was released...

Well, it's all coming back to me now, and I'm remembering now strange, and frankly bizarre this season is!

What's with the fairy? We never saw a fairy on the series...and what's up with the slug...with a skull around its neck? I feel like I'm high on drugs reading this, lol. Bizarro World for sure.

Is that...Olivia?

The story is sort of all over the place but it's interesting learning more about the different Slayers and their experiences being called. It's sad that the decoy girl got killed.

I enjoyed the writing in this issue. Poignant and thought provoking...

People were overall furious when Angel the Series showed that Buffy was apparently doing nothing but partying with the Immortal. Creating the duplicates plot allowed them to get around that.
It makes no sense. Wouldn't both Angel and Spike smell that its not Buffy

While their sense of smell is better than a humans, I suspect they' have to get a lot closer than we saw them get, esp. on a crowded dance floor.

Eh, a decoy for a Vampire Slayer that couldn't fool a vampire wouldn't be a very good decoy, right?

I would also doubt that vampires have super advanced senses of smell. Like, it's good, just not as good as Werewolves or Bracken (Doyle 's folk.) Vampires may specialize in sight, as seeing in ultraviolet and Infrared might be more useful. Vampires can track blood for miles, sure, but not like the dogs can.

But Spike was able to track where Buddy went when she was kicked out of her house by her scent...
Wasn't Angel able to tell Wesley and Lilah were sleeping together because he could smell it on one or both of them? I'm not sure. I could be confusing it with other scenes.

I do know that Angel used his nose more than once (though he used his ears more) in a way that was amazing by human standards...but I do expect a crowded dance floor with a lot of perfumes and cologne (plus the booze and probably tobacco in the air) would make it difficult to hone in on, at least until one is right by the person.

Yeah, I seem to remember this too.
True, but do you remember how Doyle was able to pinpoint via smell where A hid the Ring of Ammara, or how Oz was able to track Willow via smell, something Angel didn't even bother trying. I think Vampires are like cats, where they have a good sense of smell, but probably not the best sense of smell, when compared to dogs or bears or vultures.

No, in the verse, there are several instances of vampires having super strong sense of scent. Like Spike was able to track where Buffy went when she was kicked out of her house by her scent.

And doesn't Drusilla say something to he affect that she can smell Buffy all over Spike?

I think Dru's comment was more about a kind of psychic stink?

I know Dru says something along those lines, wish I could remember the details of it.

FYI

I found it! And I stand corrected. Drusilla doesn't say she smells Buffy on him, she says she can "see her [Buffy] floating all around" Spike, which of course, does prove Spike's obsession with Buffy, but isn't an example of his possible heightened sense of smell. I'm not sure why I remembered the quote wrong!

Anyways, here is the full quote, from "Fool For Love."

"But you lie! I can still see her. Floating all around you. Laughing. Why? Why won't you push her away."

Don't forget this exchange between Buffy and Spike in "Chosen," where Buffy asks him is he can smell Angel.

Spike: "So, where's tall, dark, and forehead?"

Buffy:
"Let me guess... you can smell him?"

Spike: "Yeah. That, and I also used my enhanced vampire eyeballs to watch you kissing him."

Ah, forgot about Fool for Love. I was thinking it was in Lover's Walk, which made no sense. Dru says it with the Fungus Demon standing nearby I think?

That is correct. he was also able to tell that Wesley had sex with a bleached blonde.

But as you noted he was standing next to Wesley both times.
