How many of you are disappointed that Buffy reboot didn't happen?

It would have had maybe protenital to show new characters, a Buffy comeback and maybe even cool guest stars that never happened like Willow/Dark Willow. But it's a shame 3 main cast memebers have passed so recently.
 
I basically expected if it did happen there would be two or three seasons of maybe ten a season. The writing would not have been as good because a) very few genre shows these days are as well written as 20-30 years ago and b) say what you will about Whedon but he was an excellent writer. However, I think there would have been plenty of fan service which made it worth watching. At best, it might have been analogous to Star Trek Picard, mainly trading on familiar actors reprising familiar roles which would have been enough for us hard core fans but would have failed to draw in new viewers on a massive scale. It would have been nice to see something on camera about what happened to the characters we love years later and I was particularly drawn to Sarah's comments about possibly finding a way to bring back dead characters. Then again, reboots are rarely that successful or anything close to the original.

I mostly want Buffy to continue in some form, books, comics, audio dramas, something, to draw more people to watch the original show.

The same. To be frank I would've watched because I was curious about Buffy herself after 20 years not because I was interested in the new characters (I wasn't)

Also Buffy was a show of its time, I recently did a rewatch and enjoyed it but Im from that time. I know a friend who did a rewatch (who also likes it) and got her kids to try it but to them it was meh, it wasn't for them and I think that would've happened across the board generally.

Repackaging a late 90s show for 2026 just wasn't gonna work

Nick Brendon did talk about the reboot in his final interview
 
Holy snapping whatsisnames Btvs fan, did you really refer to yourself as frank?

I did want there to be more of the slayer, I liked the name of the new slayer. Although I would have liked to now how the slayer appeared.

I am not disappointed at all. In fact, I'm relieved.

There are so many reboots, preludes, epilogues and other copies in the so-called "creative arts" now that worthwhile original ideas are being pushed out of existence. And as @Btvs fan said, it was a show of its time. It could have been modernized but that would seem like a betrayal of the original idea. And for all his faults, Joss was a good writer but it was a good decision that he was not involved.

Also, one of the big promoters of the Buffy story was Dolly Parton and no one else is going to step in and continue her work behind the scenes.

Honestly even with Joss involved Im not sure how good it would've been given he did the Comics and look at those!!!
 
I preferred to think of it as a reboot by Sarah Michelle Gellar, not Buffy as thee new slayer was going to be called Nova.
I hope that it didn't deter SMG, I hope she will write a script, the vampire script will always be wanted. I just hope the vampire does not have sparkly skin.

She wasn't the script writer. It was Nora and Lila Zuckerman
There bios show they worked on Seasons 4 to 7 on Agents of Shield and did some episodes of Suits and something called Poker Face. None of which I saw

Kinda in the same boat, Joan.

10% interested, 90% concerned and wary. We've seen a stream of reboots fail. You can't capture that same magic twice. People would've tuned in initially out of curiosity, but I think it would've lost steam pretty quickly after that.

Would've damaged the legacy of the original series. Leave things alone. Let the world continue by rewatching the original, through fan fic or whatever else.

So, I'm relieved. I think people were excited by the idea of New Sunnydale, but the reality would've been very different.
 
No, not really. Buffy was really lightening in a bottle. No Joss, none of the original actors, with Sarah being a nominal executive producer and occasional guest star and teen setting was not going to appeal to me.

I also don't understand why you need Buffy to make a urban fantasy series with life lessons for teens. Both Charmed, Smallville and Supernatural were more successful than Buffy, and used a similar formula. I mean, these were pretty heavily public domain properties, you could always make up your own setting, and have at it.

The only thing I really care for is a reunion special of some kind, but with Xander and Giles gone, and Joss excommunicated, I don't think that would happen. It's weird to think you can pull off a TNG reunion with all cast members, but not Buffy.

I think it was more excitement at seeing Buffy again than New Sunnydale. I think the Network even knew that which is why they wanted the pilot reworked with more Buffy in it

Yes, exactly. That's why I said people were probably excited at the idea of the show - that would be fleeting.

I actually saw comments like, "I don't care if the series is bad, I just want to see the characters!" - you should care if the series is well-written and if it's any good. That thrill of seeing Buffy won't sustain you for long.

I completely agree, nostalgia bait and member berries can only get you so far.

Also casting a 15 year old would've been an issue too. It would been hard for the audience to live vicariously through the character as opposed casting an adult which enables them to live the fantasy

I would like to have seen it. Maybe it would have been bad, maybe it would have been good. Given that the original format that Buffy had is almost non-existent nowadays, bad seems more likely, but even bad doesn't get rid of the existing material. So, it would have been nice.

New here, but as soon as I saw this thread I had to chat to you guys! I've talked about this with my friend (who's a die hard BTVS fan too) and we both felt the same. Sooooo many reboots, film and TV, have just been awful recently, not to say this would have been but it got me nervy tbh

I'm on my 63782th rewatch and it still means so much to me, and other shows have just been tainted by their reboots that I've had to stop watching them to retain the feeling of the original show. And even if the writing, plot, acting, etc was great, these 90s/00s reboots are getting the visual tone all wrong, they're so light and bright and everything is HD perfection. Hence why I had to bust out the actual DVDs after streaming 2 episodes of the massacred remaster. I love the grain, the sharp lighting in the earlier seasons, those are the things that actually bring a sense of nostalgia. Maybe it's good that it didn't happen and we just get to live through more of our imagination

Angel season 5 was shot in HD
Me. I was looking forward to it so much, and I was so mad and upset when it was announced that Hulu wasn't picking up the show.
