I just rewatched this episode and wanted to rant about it a bit. It’s a really good episode, one that always stands out in memory. There’s so much in this episode that propels the season forward and it comes about halfway through the season. I notice that is something a lot of new shows try to do.

You have the confirmation that Angel is now soulless and has reverted back to Angelus, which is a big twist on its own. Then, Willow finds out about Xander and Cordelia, adding more tension. There’s a sweet moment later between Willow and Oz to drive that plot. Everyone finds out about Jenny’s purpose and knowledge... We see Buffy stand above a crowd and shoot a rocket launcher, which may be the coolest image of all time.

My favorite part of the entire episode isn’t any of that though. I love the conversation between Giles and Buffy in the car that happens near the end of the episode. It really conveys that their relationship is special and that he doesn’t feel toward her like another watcher may (example: Kendra and her watcher). That was made clear last season when Giles was going to face The Master instead of Buffy, but it was really touching to see it said aloud. Anthony Stewart Head was great in that scene.
