New Viewers and Season 5

Season 5 had so many reveals it is always a ride. I saw her reaction to Dawn. And then to Dawn is a Key. And Glory. And now Ben. It’s just so fun watching new viewers’ reactions!
 
Its such a different experience for new viewers now. Having the ability to binge or option search spoilers isnt the same as the week to week wondering. I am doing a rewatch of Agents of Shield and I think the suspense of week to week really added to the experience of the story.

I'm a supporter of the week-to-week format. People churn through so much; I think a combination of 'FOMO' and what probably feels like an obligation (of sorts) to watch as much content as possible considering you're paying, that at the end of the year, do you really remember what you watched?

Whereas watching one episode a week meant you got to absorb what happened, you learned to be patient, and as you mentioned, built up anticipation/suspense.

Interesting because I quit watching midway through season 2 because it was hard keeping up week to week for me.

This is an excellent point. I feel like we “know” characters more when we’re watching them grow and make choices over a year’s worth of week-to-week episodes vs binging

Right? We absorb storylines, actions characters take sit with us. It was 'water cooler' talk ("What's going to happen next week?!"). Binging through series after series, we lose all that.

Don't get me wrong, I've gone on the occasional binge. But ask me about it in 12 months, and who really remembers?

Also from a practical standpoint, getting an episode a week means you can watch other media (or read, or whatever one wants to do!) in between.

I think I tried continuing where I left off but i didn't love the end of season 2 storyline so I never finished it. I've read all the wiki summaries though. 😂
 
The Knights are a legit honest mystery, you need to rewatch every episode they show up in, there are clues littered throughout.

Great college hijinks in this season, they say a lot about the challenges of sophomore year. Buffy trying to pick a major before she finishes her core classes is very relatable.

Did you know Olaf is actually a Troll god? I know, I missed that part too

Getting Brittany Spears to play a robotic sex doll was the best but of stunt celebrity casting in the history of television. Also, Joyce just needed a nap.

I thought the introduction of Gnarl as an enemy of the scabby hobbitses was pretty clever.

I always wondered how he wound up being a Troll God, rather than just your everyday troll. Also, I'm not sure, but was the first mention of him being a Troll God in The Gift when Anya said the hammer of a Troll God would be useful? (And without it things would have gone differently.)

Hmm, interesting! I wonder if Anya in her rage said something like, "You're such a troll, you'd be the god of all trolls!" and it was taken literally.

That would be pretty potent stuff for a mortal to do without wish magic. Wish magic could certainly have done it, though it was only barely under the control of the vengeance demons, and at the point Anya - at that point, a human called Anyanka; Aud was part of the S7 retcon of just about everything known about her history to that point - would have been unlikely to been able to manage it. Maybe Olaf fought to become it? He did enjoy smashing stuff. "PUNY RECEPTACLE!!!"

It seems unlikely; there doesn't appear to be any pain in it. And, originally, by the time D'Hoffryn met her, Olaf was some time in the past.

Ah, thank you for the correction!

I did read this:
"By the age of twenty, Aud had fallen in love with a man named Olaf, a Viking warrior who enjoyed hunting trolls and drinking at the bar."

Viking warrior, and enjoyed hunting trolls. Combine both, and I guess that's why he was a Troll God?

It's honestly hard to take S6&7 seriously when it comes to lore and background. Honestly, had the writers even watched S1-5?
Re: Olaf; Well, it was either a retcon or something got cut out of the original episode. I mean, it was very obliviously a special hammer in Olaf's episode, but it was not Troll Mjolnir.

If we get to head canon this, Whoever so lifts this hammer, be he worthy, shall possess the power of OLAF. Basically, kingship among trolls goes to the strongest warrior, the rightful owner of the Troll God's enchanted mallet. Anya's ex spent the last thousand battling other trolls, becoming Troll King, then defending the hammer from challengers. Buffy, in accordance with Troll Law, took the hammer from Olaf, kept it from him for one minute, becoming the hammer's master. That's why she can effortlessly swing it, but Spike can't.

Olaf isn't a proper name in this circumstance, it's just what Trolls call their king.
