This is gutting.l ๐Ÿ˜ข I was even more a fan of TNG than even Buffy growing up.
He made TNG without him it wouldn't have been the success it was and probably wouldn't have made it past the first 2 seasons which were awful.

Rest in peace Patrick you were fantastic actor and a fine man

This is shocking. He was 86, and yet I still think of TNG as the younger series. Like @Btvs fan said, he really elevated TNG, made it classier just with his presence. You could see his Shakespearean training in everything he did. RIP.
Roddenbury idea for a French Captain were almost cartoon. He himself saud that The Measure of a Man was the first good episode they did.

This was him as Lenin

Put a beard on him and he does resemble Lenin! But bless him, I don't think he ever did any other accent but his own - even to play a Russian.
A horrible week for Trek fans. This one is really gutting. It can't be overlooked how important his performance as Picard was in keeping Star Trek fresh and taking it in a different direction, if couldn've easily gone wrong. He is the best ever Captain IMO, and did it all over 7 seasons. Stewart was one of those actors who was never really bad. A legend. RIP. Thoughts go to his fans, family and friend.

bloody buggering #$%. i'm so upset. I just want it to stop. this year. and today I found out I've lost a friend and had a relative diagnosed with cancer this week. I really hate October. Too many people i love gone in October and the ones I respect and admire as well. sighs. please, reaper, we fear you, ok? Don't take so many please. very sad right now.

I find that I am moved by the loss of Sir Patrick much more than I thought i'd be. We've not just lost one of the good ones, we've lost one of the best ones.
I can't be 100% positive but I'm pretty sure the first time I encountered him was when I saw the the late 70s RSC production of Antony and Cleopatra in Stratford. The title characters were played by Glenda Jackson and Trevor Howard, and the cast contained many British acting luminaries (although, at the time, I didn't know any of them). Patrick played Enobarbus, Antony's friend and, ultimately, his betrayer.
He will always be my favourite captain and I can't help but feel that we have lost another force for good and a great male role model...

I agree, not just the best Captain but the best actor on any of the Trek shows.
Like I said, given how awful the first 2 TNG seasons were, I don't see them carrying on if not him.

Ian Mckellans tribute to Patrick Stewart, a friend who he'd known for decades long before X-Men, is moving.

Farewell Captain Picard!

He brought Star Trek into a new level of prestige and diplomacy to a series that followed the more brash TOS. It is always unfortunate when a great actor is gone.

Picard was a cultured man of learning and desire to explore whereas Kirk was more Roddenburys fantasy. He'd beam down to a planet beat up a bad guy then gave sex with the woman. And if you look at Picard as he was originally conceived, he was a joke complete with French stereotypes. Riker was meant to be the Hero. It was Patrick who changed that simply from his peformance so it was about Picard and into a great Captain.
Thats probably one of the reasons the TNG movies didn't work, they tried to turn him into an action hero and that just wasn't Picard

I like the TNG movies mostly, maybe not so much Nemesis.
@twoslayers I can't stand Insurrection, its basically anti Star Trek and tells us the rich white people have more rights than the rest of the Universe and the whole crew go along with it

The most quintessential British Frenchman ever. ๐Ÿ˜€

Talking about his acting, I read that his performance as Professor X led to Xavier being retconned into being part British in the comic books, which is impressive if true.

R.I.P. Sir Patrick Stewart.

My preferred memories of Sir Patrick are from the film The Canterville Ghost with Neve Campbell, in which she portrayed one of Shakespeare's characters but what would you expect from one of the people who helped run the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford upon Avon. His ability to turn his voice to sound like a person who lived in the era the bard wrote about was remarkable. He will be remembered.

Ian Mckellan was perfect casting as Magneto with Patrick Stewarts Xavier from there years working together at the RS Company.

In I Claudius he wears a wig ๐Ÿ˜„
One of Patrick Stewarts finest moments

He said that when he was young - he went bald at a young age - he used a range of wigs as a selling point, saying he could do multiple roles because of them. Before he fully embraced the Bald of Awesome.
