Creed 9/10- a great reformatting of the Rocky series, with Rocky as trainer/mentor. But the real reason this movie works so well is Micheal B. Jordan as Adonis Creed

The Martian 8/10- Nicely cinematic (what else from Ridley Scott) and Matt Damon is engaging as ever. Book was still better since I never, ever thought that Matt was up against it- we was too upbeat ALL the time. They needed someone more vulnerable in the lead role. Wouldn't have been as fun a movie, but would've been more moving perhaps.

The thing about the MI movies is that the quality of each is wholly dependant on who's directing them. Brain De Palma did a decent tricksy espionage flick, John Woo did moronic bullets/pigeons slo-mo ballet, JJ. Abrams brought his own storytelling style, Ghost Protocol and Rogue Nation were both kinda... bland.
I find thats the problem with the franchise- the inconsistancy in quality and tone.

i really love that movie. And the way some of the boxing scenes were shot really felt fresh and original. They were filmed like a movie, versus being filmed like the traditional 'boxing match' in the series. You know what I mean.

Well that's fair, but then I wouldn't want everyone to be the same in tone anyway then it would just get boring. It still retains most of the core elements and for seems like watchable pop corn blockbuster fare which I'm never going to love. BTW how funny is it that we've ended up talking in detail about the films when @Buffy Summers wasn't even referring to them in her post😀
 
Taxi Driver - 7/10
Finally got around to watching this classic. I liked it quite a bit, but wasn't blown away by it. But then again, I'm not the biggest fan of Scosese's films. But maybe I'll like it better next time.
 
@Mr Trick Why? I didn't say it's crap. I liked it. But I have yet to be blown away by a Scorsese film.

The original (1933) version of "King Kong." Actually, I watched the two reboots, in reverse order, ending with the original I completely ignored the Japanese rip offs simply because they aren't about the "real" Kong (See Xander's comment in Season 7 about "that big, dumb lizard who was NOT Godzilla. Same principal) I read that there is going to be yet another reboot, called "Skull Island," and I wanted to re-familiarize myself with the story. (They're also in the planning stage for a newer, hopefully much better, "King Kong vs Godzilla," but I'm saving my opinion on that one for now)

You just can't beat the original. CGI, as much as I like it in modern movies like "John Carter" and "Avatar," just doesn't have the same "feel" to it.
 
You mean it doesn't have the same kick to it tight ?

Because its a Masterpiece god damn it!😀 It does take two or three viewings to really get it. I suggest watching it again. If Scorsese isn't your thing I get that. I don't like all his work, but would be interested to hear which ones you've seen. I think Taxi Driver is quite a different film to his normal type.

I love the original King Kong - how they managed to create that much excitement and spectacle back in 1933 is really impressive. It still holds up.

You think it a Masterpiece ? I wouldn't go that far but I think it pretty good. How is it a different film to his normal type ?

Its in the top twenty greatest films ever made for me. I think its more surreal than his usual film, and leaves much more to the audience to work out for themselves. The depiction of masculinity and class is also very interesting in it. It does have layers it just takes a few viewings to see them I think.
 
If you say so . I only saw it once so I might have missed some things then. Plus it was some time ago too .

If you think it takes multiple viewings, then what are you complaining about? 😛 That's what I said.
I've seen Goodfellas, Casino, Gangs of New York, The Depated, The Wolf of Wall Street and Shutter Island. I hated The Wolf of Wall Street, and I didn't like The Departed either. Shutter Island and Gangs of New York I thought were okay, Casino and Goodfellas are great. I don't know what it is I dislike about his films, but sometimes the pacing feels really weird and the sense of time is all over the place.
I still want to watch Cape Fear, Mean Streets, The Last Temptation of Christ, Hugo, The Aviator and Raging Bull, and I'm really looking forward to Silence.

I wasn't complaining just making a point!😛

You should also check out King of Comedy. Its a very different film about celebrity and a very different role for De Niro. New York, New York is also very underrated.

I respect Scorsese as a film fan and the work he has done promoting lost films, and restoring them.
