I'm getting pretty sick of this narrative. I won't believe anything until it's officially announced by Joss. It is sort of interesting that Dolly Parton is involved though.

I have been vocal about not wanting a remake. However, I wouldn't mind a reboot, with a new Slayer, and set in the present may be interesting. And it has to be produced by Joss.

Rights: Disney ought to own the Original Series, as majority owner. The WB, as the broadcasting network, may own a share, as may the producers (Kuzui Enterprises, Sanddollar and Mutant Enemy). They should not have the rights to make a new series, and the Producers were clearly free to shop the product around. Disney or the WB may also own the IP from the TV show, in part, or in whole. This is the reason why I think Buffy will never get remade, because buying television rights to a YA Book is much cheaper.

As an aside, if anyone has purchased any recent merchandise, whom is it licensed by? Thank you.

The tarot card set they released late last year was a Disney product, and the new books are released under an imprint owned by Disney.

I agree on part 2 of your post, but the “woke mess” is…odd. Buffy was very ahead of its time and very liberal in its thinking and writing, having lapses from time to time like Seeing Red (vomits).

Having a diverse cast doesn’t make it a woke mess. It just is indicative of the time and world we live in, and I think that’s a good thing. A lot of people out there should see their demographics in a heroic or prominent role instead of a sidekick or stereotype. 🙂

It has been recently, yes. There were threads on here about Buffy being cast only as a specific skin shade.

Wasnt Willow gay straight away in the new comic too? I duno I dont read the comic. I wonder how that would change her as a coming of age character, to always know herself from the start?

Casting is fashion as much as anything else that goes in and out of fashion. I'd rather wait for the current trends to pass before a Buffy reboot.

To be fair, the only two things we know about the 2018 reboot for certain is, Buffy or "Buffy" would be played by a black actress, and that, somehow, the '97 Continuity was going to kept in some form, manner or fashion. Technically, we also know whom the showrunner was, and that Joss would write a few episodes, but neither of those are still true.

When Amazon's LOTR The Rings of Power was filming I was concerned about all the focus on Diversity and the lack of focus on the Plot & Characters. Watching the show, the producers hired some fantastic actors and my concerns were proven baseless. I hope the Buffy producers do the same.

While I doubt it will happen I would be happy to see a reboot. If its good then great, and if not then we still have the original and are no worse off.
But I would prefer a new slayer set in a new location rather than a new Buffy arriving in Sunnydale again. And hope there would still be room for standalone eps rather than it just being purely plot based

I think the word woke has lost its meaning now. Its just become a word that people throw out in arguments. And I doubt most people use it to mean being aware and informed about social injustice !
Buffy was always a progressive show in many ways and that’s a good thing. But there are good and bad ways of dealing with progressive ideas.
When Buffy was dealing with female empowerment and LBGTQ etc it did it in a way that felt organic to the world and its characters and never came across as preachy.
There are still shows which think that by including diverse characters their job is done so they come across as say the "gay" character rather than being a fully fledged well rounded character. Which is sad because it gives the anti woke crowd something to cling to.
Although the problem with these shows is that they are poorly written and conceived, not that they are "woke".

Not sure about the actors part. They were good but it was the writing what made the show the most studied series of all time. I mean, yes, SMG and the rest did well but BTVS wasn't The Sopranos, sorry.

Thats why I don't care about actors in a potential reboot but the writing team. BTVS was the formula and, as a good TV show from pre Golden Age and pre streaming, writers land.

So yeah, give me Noxon, Minear or Jed and Mo, even Bell, and the cast will be ok. Thats why Shield (even without Joss but same formula and Mutant Enemy) have a strong fanbase, future Comic Con soldouts and 136 episodes.

Yeah, my belief is that "Buffy" has economic value as a brand, and whoever produces this show is going to want that name. "Slayers" is a fine name for a spinoff, horrible name for a reboot.

As for Buffy as a name. The actress who is cast would most likely be mixed race, not four grandparents black*. Giving her and Buffy a common ancestor, an "Elizabeth Somers," who serves as a namesake for both, would be easy enough.

*I don't make the rules, take it up with the producers of "Black-ish."

Unless you are going to do a 'reimanining' that is as excellent as the 2003 Battlestar Galactica series, don't waste your time. The point of the reboot? As @AlphaFoxtrot says - money. Beginning & End of it. Producers figure they can make a good profit and go for it. Studios can make a tired property somewhat cool again, and, highest priority, make a big profit. So we get bad TV. 😖

Because there is no equity in a spin-off about another Slayer. There is brand equity in the name Buffy.

It's been so long since it aired they could even say "it's not your mother's Buffy"

I hope the remake is not an exact copy, in this day and age having a chosen one hopping into bed with the same creatures (demons) she is meant to be a slayer of is just - silly.
