This thread is for discussion of the Sunnydale Fanfic Club podcast. The next story will be:

if you come softly
by jilyandbambi
Summary: "In which, Adam fails before he ever gets a chance to get off the ground, right around the time of the reveal of the suddenly not-so-mythical Slayer, giving Professor Walsh a very sinister Plan B. Meanwhile, our intrepid heroine is dealing with some serious developments of her own, to which everyone's favorite Friendly Neighborhood Vampire might hold some much-needed clues."
Rating: Mature
Warning: Graphic Depictions of Violence
Words:
33,767 (so far)
Relationships: Angel/Buffy Summers

This is the first time the podcast is featuring a work in progress. If you have questions for the author, they need to be in by Friday.

I enjoy this fic and I think Jilyandbambi is a great writer but please mind the warnings as there are some very difficult and graphic scenes. This is a fic writer who has previously written for the Star Wars fandom so she is relatively knew to the Buffy fandom. If you can stomach some darker stuff go and give this one a read to support new writers in our fandom! 🙂

Good job on the podcast @jilyandbambi ! I enjoyed hearing your views on the interactions between The Watchers and Slayers. I agree with you that I would have loved to see a season/story arc where the watchers were the explicit big bad instead of the background patriarchal metaphor of men in power. There are some good fics out there that really explore the Watchers as the big bad. If you or anyone is interested some of my favorite stories that explore this are: of course first and foremost: Phoenix Burning by Yahtzee; Domestication by Indific

I think I am going to try my hand at this technique for writing scenes of "arrive late, leave early." So I picked up a tool today. Yay. I know you just updated "Becoming" so I look forward to getting around to reading that when I have some time this week. I also look forward to you updating IYCS.

Awww, you're so sweet!!

I wish I had some tips for you for that "come late, leave early" style, but since I didn't even realize I was doing it at the time.....all I can say is best of luck!!

I have read that fic by Indie (as well as all of her other work--another one of my Buffy fandom heroes--> lol, I'm such a dork!), but while I've seen Phoenix Burning rec'd by practically everyone, future fics aren't really my thing, so...

Looking forward to your reading/review of Becoming. Thanks for checking out/reviewing my episode!! <3

Ok valid but Phoenix Burning is probably the best Bangel fics in our fandom (I know that is a bold statement but I feel pretty confident saying that) and certainly a top fic in the fandom at large. So just, you know, think about it 😉

I'm totally with you on the buffy fandom heros. I had a bangel vet comment on one of my fics once and I was like OH MAN THIS IS SO COOL! hahah 🙂

I've heard this said about that fic, specifically, many, many times.

I'll see...

Another thing I was shocked about to learn in this episode is that Buffy the Vampire Slayer is #5 on FF.net for stories. Which sure, now most people write and post on AO3 (I find AO3 much more user friendly than FF.net) but that is still impressive that our fandom is still one the top fic fandoms out there!

This is the copy/paste from when you search by fandom (TV) (sorted by popularity which is the default search)

Supernatural (121K)
Glee (108K)
Doctor Who (74.6K)
Sherlock (59.4K)
Buffy: The Vampire Slayer (50.1K)

And then if you click on TV show for crossovers:
  1. Doctor Who (12,691)
  2. Supernatural (10,717)
  3. Buffy: The Vampire Slayer (8,056)
...
17. Angel (1,439)

And if we are comparing Harry Potter/Twilight which are not included in the TV show category but which are usually associated with the genre of fantasy that is BtVS/AtS Buffy still wins out. These are the numbers for those:

Harry Potter (43,278)
Twilight (13,029)

So I was curious about the AO3 stats. (Yes - I know I have way too much time on my hands except I don't but I'm avoiding work... ) This is what I came across:

AO3 Stats - These include non TV shows, including movies, video games, etc. and this is from 2017:

1. Supernatural 152370
2. Harry Potter - J. K. Rowling 116423
3. Sherlock Holmes & Related Fandoms 99221
4. Teen Wolf (TV) - 80292
5. The Avengers (Marvel Movies) - 78188
6. One Direction (Band) - 48518*
7. Captain America (Movies) - 45178
8. Homestuck -42043
9. Doctor Who - 40868
10. Star Wars - All Media Types - 40000
11. Dragon Age (Video Games) - 38249
12. Video Blogging RPF - 37427
13. Bandom - 35964
14. Haikyuu!! - 32319
15. Shingeki no Kyojin | Attack on Titan - 32105
16. Once Upon a Time (TV) - 31366
17. Glee - 30204
18. Merlin (TV) - 26636
19. Buffy the Vampire Slayer - 23748

Although this analysis puts BTVS significantly lower at #46 - so not sure why the metrics are so incredibly different.

I know that most of the Buffy related fics I read I have to go and find them in other websites, so I'm sure only a fraction of what is out there is published on AO3 and even on FF.net. I still go digging for stories on the wayback machine at Scribes of Angel and on the Sublime website etc.

Not gonna lie, the future setting annoyed me the first time I read Phoenix Burning. But I've since come to appreciate Yahtzee's talents so much that I don't mind it. I've read it three or four times now!

Have you read other Yahtzee stories?

I've only been able to listen to the first 20 minutes of the podcast episode, but it's great so far! I too am in awe of the early fic writers in the fandom. Hopefully I'll get to finish listening tomorrow!

Finished the episode! Very entertaining! I'm a big Dawn fan, though, so.... 😛

I'm very curious about your thoughts on BtVS Seasons 6 and 7, @jilyandbambi. How did you feel about where they took the Buffy and Giles relationship?

Haha, sorry about all the Dawn-bashing. For what it's worth, I tried to like her, I really, really did.

I hate everything about seasons 6 and 7, where they took the Buffy-Giles relationship is at the top of the list. I like to pretend that they were able to reconcile after season 7. After all, a father's love for his child is unwavering.

The comics don't exist to me. 😛

Like the half-wit I am, I read the wrong story, though it impressed me so much (I am hesitant to say 'like') that I will definitely read this story, too. I even think I may be able to stomach some Dawn bashing.
I know you just updated "Becoming" so I look forward to getting around to reading that when I have some time this week.
Brace yourself. It is amazing but it is awful.
