The comics will be decanonised yes?

I can't see them being kept on as canon to the new Buffy tv show. They are too niche to reference, but are also hard to simply ignore if you did want to keep them as canon, given Vampires were exposed.

I never fell for the idea that they were canon. Joss either had a clause in the transfer of intellectual property rights to the comic company that compelled him to say they were canon or saw a financial interest in saying they were canon but I doubt anyone could examine "season 8" and connect it with the television show.
 
I totally agree with @ethanreigns. I could find almost nothing in S8 or S9 or S10 that connected to the TV show beyond the names. Everything else was off.
 
That would be my guess. Especially as the storylines, from what I have heard, were regularly daft. Also, from what I can tell, SMG disliked Spuffy so much she would rather be unemployed than continue with it and I believe Spuffy was a major part of the comics, so I couldn't imagine she'd be remotely happy continuing with that storyline.

It'd be cool if they tried to work some of the ideas from the comics into New Sunnydale but definitely not all of them should still be canon. Some things from the comics I'd love to see in New Sunnydale though might be Oz back for sure.. not with Willow but would be so awesome to see them as friends, working together/closely again...
Giles and Faith- though I know this is unlikely since Eliza doesn't want to act anymore but would be amazing if she came out of retirement just for a few episodes arc of something.
Though it might be more difficult since they're playing vampires, I would still obviously love to see David playing Angel again, James playing Spike, Juliet playing Drusilla and Mercedes playing Harmony. In the comics, Harmony becomes famous- sorry but I can see this happening. I think it will be cool if they play it in New Sunnydale as if society knows about vampires now. Out of all of them, it'd make sense that at least Angel or Spike became human in the past 25 years so that could explain the actors aging.. And Juliet and Mercedes still look really young anyway and could play Harmony and Dru again in my opinion. In the comics season 9 Angel + Faith, Drusilla has a pet demon that feeds on trauma or something, removes trauma so she isn't insane anymore which is a cool idea.
Also from the comics, we should definitely see rogue slayers in the New Sunnydale series (eventually at least)... like Gigi (super rich) and Simone (super punk, slayer turned vampire which is something they never did but should've done on the original show).

I assume they are going to be like Star Wars S-Canon, or Star Trek's Animated Series Canon. Not canon until referenced in a canon source. Fray is an exception,

So, that leaves the question,
  • What happened to Buffy's slaying organization?
  • What happened to Angel & Friends at the Battle of Los Angeles?
  • How did the events of the Final Battle alluded to in IWRY and Fray proceed?
  • The Outcome of any significant events planned for A 6 & 7?
  • The Outcome of any significant events planned for unmade spin-offs and sequel series?
  • Any significant events from between 2004 and 2026?
That's 22 years, that's enough time for the survivors to go from college to over the hill.That's a lot of time to cover.
 
As others above have already mentioned, there's valid reasons as to why the comics won't be considered canon. -SMG and her distancing herself from JW and storylines/relationships she didn't like in the series
-The comics being so far removed from the actual series itself (Spike in outer space? Haha!),
-JW saying they're canon merely as a selling point.

We have to remember covering any gaps of the original crew will likely come later (if the series manages to remain on air). We might get a little blurb about what Buffy has been doing or where she's been living, but we'll be focused on the new era of characters.
 
It's going to be a continuation of the show only. Buffy and Angel shows as the backstory. Not a chance anyone making the new series is wading through years of comics that only a handful of us have read.

In my head the original shows will always be the foundation. Comics and new show more like what if potential futures. Take it or leave it depending on enjoyment.

They were never accepted as canon by the known supporters of the television show BTVS when the comics started.
I was one who did not accept the comics as being " true " Buffy.
And still am.
 
If Joss tells us they are de canonized due to the existence of the sequel, I will accept that, but until that time, I will still go with the fact that S8-12 are canon as he originally said.

What would be really wild is if they referenced events that happened in those seasons in the sequel.
 
I think it is very likely that the comics will quickly be invalidated as canon (or perhaps becoming yet another 'verse) by events in a new series (without even needing any official word and I doubt Joss is going to get much chance to say anything officially now), which I expect, going by what I have heard about them, will completely ignore them. Comic books are an "and also..." when it comes to making money, and there will be little incentive to keep as canon comics that they will be making little (if any; can they still be bought new?) money from. I would expect that, if things take off, a new series of tie-in comics will be given the go ahead.

Agreed. And doubtful JW will get a say in regards to anything now, comics or new series.
Thinking about it, was that a case of it being a poor echo of it, or did Echo likened that rendition (the comic) of the show to the Dollhouse?
