I'd like to watch the commentaries and extras so I'm thinking of getting the 20th Anniversary Buffy DVD set. Is it worth it or can you get that extra content elsewhere online? Or would a different version be better? It sounds like the series has been released on DVD before.

I'm glad you posted this, because I'd like to hear peoples views on which boxset is best. I have the dvd's but they aren't a set and are mix & match, and I want a proper boxset, but there seem to be a few available and I don't know which one is best.

I've been considering the boxset myself, for 2 reasons: 1. It takes up less space and I have too many TV show collections for my studio apartment. 2. 🙁 I'm missing one of my S6 DVDs... the one with Once More, with Feeling on it 🙁

But, anyway, to the topic, I have no idea but I would suspect that it could be found online. However, if you feel like it's affordable, I'd get the boxset, to me it seems worth it in the end, regardless.

I wanted the new box-set because it's so pretty, but I decided against it because I have my original mix and match set, and then my brother got me the Chosen collection set for Christmas one year. I can't find any concrete info about what is new with the extras in the 20th anniversary release (I think it comes with issue #1 of the comics), so I'm just holding out for a Blu-ray release one day *crosses fingers*

So, I can't speak to the new release, but I can tell you about the Chosen collection set (It's an older one but you can still find it online in some places). It comes with the seasons packaged nicely and a booklet detailing a preview of each episode. It had a DVD included with the Paleyfest cast reunion, but outside of that just the regular DVD features from each season. There are some pretty good features and commentaries on each season-I think they are included on any set you decide to get!

Just read on Twitter that a 'mega deal' between Disney and Fox is to be announced on Thursday, which might eventually lead to new Buffy HD remastered.

Tsk tsk as a Spuffy you need to correct this.

So right now are there no HD/remastered dvd sets? If not how do people make those HD quality gif sets? @Mylie do you happen to know?

From what I know, people use the pivot version or the HD version from Hulu. I use Netflix’s version myself though it doesn’t show because I suck at it lol

Umm I love your gifs! Buffy isn’t on US Netflix anymore. 🙁 we’ve only got Hulu that doesn’t allow for pause and screen grab so you gotta be fast!

I wonder if the Amazon versions are HD? They allow for screen grabs. That is what Hamilton in Sunnydale uses. But Angel is not on Amazon 🙁

Canada never had HD Buffy so I had to be creative... and a bit illegal...
There is an HD version but it's terrible. It's thought to be the worst conversion ever seen for a tv show (or so says @BuffyHDBluRay on twitter)

It really is terrible. I'm all for a remastered Blu-ray (if for nothing else but to keep up with equipment as the years go by) but not if it is going to look like this...hopefully if it does happen they fix this mess.
I have the original cardboard or the Slimline sets that were released in the late 2000s. My TV is 32 inches. I have not watched the DVD sets in at least five years. (I try to, but then I get stuck on Beer Bad, and I really don't want to watch that episode, but I have to, since it details the closure of the Parker Arc) I have no intent of purchasing the HD version, as frankly, I don't see the point. This a problem with a lot of 90s telefantasy. They weren't filmed for HD, and a lot of the special effects simply don't exist outside of SD, therefore, going back and remastering them requires significant resources, which in a world where DVD sales are tanking due to streaming services, little incentive exists for doing so. This is why DS9 and Voyager will never get HD releases. As for Disney, they will release anything on DVD, even one hundred year old film shorts that no living person could possibly care about, but, who knows?

Hey there, I started this thread to ask which DVD box set of Buffy to buy. I wanted to share what I found and the one I finally decided to get.

A local store, Manifest Discs, which sells new and used DVDs, had multiple seasons on DVD, but there were three versions. One had thick boxes with "The Complete # Season of on DVD" horizontally (the really wide boxes below), one was thinner and had "Season #" horizontally (the first two boxes below), and the thinnest, had "The Complete Season #" vertically (seasons 3, 6 and 7 below).

I was curious why there were three versions, so I did some research. According to the link below, they released individual season box sets from 2002- 2004, then a slimmer design in 2006 and an even slimmer design in 2008. I'm guessing that's why they had three versions. Unfortunately, they didn't have a full set of the seasons in one version at the store, so I decided to keep looking.

I researched the box sets. I found three versions there too:

- The Chosen Collection (released 2005) - http://a.co/2C2BMq1
- The Complete Collection (released 2010) - http://a.co/camyHFA
- The Complete Series, Anniversary Edition (released 2017) - http://a.co/9lCiXrL

It looked like they all had most of the same content, but The Chosen Collection had 40 DVDs while the other two only had 39, so I ended up getting that one on Ebay. 🙂

I also have Buffy on Amazon prime digitally (the box set is for the extras). For anyone interested, the Amazon prime episodes aren't wide screen (like Netflix was) and include the "previously on Buffy" at the start of the episode (unlike the US DVDs).

BTW, I found a list of Buffy DVD Easter eggs. Can't wait to try them now that I have the DVDs!
