Why Did Drusilla Sire Spike?

Why do you think Drusilla sired Spike? Just because? Or, something else?

I guess a part of my head canon is that when she first saw him, she might have had a vision of his potential for destruction and whatnot. So, she didn't hesitate to sire him. That, or he was just so pitiful she thought it'd be fun.

Dru: I could. I could pick the wisest and bravest knight in all the land -- and make him mine forever with a kiss.
William: You - watch where you're going!"
Darla: Or you could just take the first drooling idiot that comes along.

I think once Dru latched on to the notion that she was going to find herself a man, she took Darla's advice and picked the first drooling idiot who came along. I hear they make for a lot of potential.

Spike is sitting on a bale of hay and finishing the job of destroying his poetry. He looks up at the sound of a woman's voice to find DRUSILLA standing serenely in the dark alley with him.


DRUSILLA
And I wonder... what possible catastrophe came crashing down from heaven and brought this dashing stranger to tears?


SPIKE
Nothing. I wish to be alone.


DRUSILLA
Oh, I see you. A man surrounded by fools who cannot see his strength, his vision, his glory. (beat) That and burning baby fish swimming all around your head.


Spike backs away from her, nervous.


SPIKE
That's quite close enough. I've heard tales of London pickpockets. You'll not be getting my purse, I tell you.


DRUSILLA (smiles)
Don't need a purse.

She points to his heart and head in succession.

DRUSILLA
Your wealth lies here... and here. In the spirit and... imagination. You walk in worlds the others can't begin to imagine.

Spike is riveted by her insight into his character.

SPIKE
Oh, yes! I mean, no. I mean... mother's expecting me.

Drusilla opens the collar of his shirt.


DRUSILLA
I see what you want. Something glowing and glistening. Something... effulgent.

Spike is beside himself. Finally someone who understands him.

SPIKE (sotto)
Effulgent.


DRUSILLA
Do you want it?

Spike has never wanted anything more.

SPIKE
Oh, yes! (touches her chest) God, yes.


Drusilla looks down for a moment as her face changes and her fangs descend. Spike reacts, more confused than afraid. She pulls back his shirt collar and buries her fangs in his neck. Spike cries out in pain but his cries quickly turn to moans of pleasure as Drusilla ends his human existence.

Dru actually saw someone special - someone who walked in worlds others couldn't imagine. Someone effulgent...That actually sounds like William.😉

Given that Drusilla is prescient, it actually makes more sense that she would be able to see William's potential than it does for Darla to see Liam's potential. Aside from being attractive, I would have thought Liam was remarkably unremarkable to Darla or maybe that was part of the challenge!

So, maybe for Darla is was kind of like "I'll Make a Man Out of You" situation with Liam?

Probably for the same reason any vampire chooses to sire somebody that they intent to spend time with after- they see something in them that draws them to that person. Darla/Liam, The Master/Darla, Drusilla/William.
Drusilla's abilities allowed her some intuitive insight that made up for the fact that she'd just blundered into a random guy.
Probably not all sirings are like this but when you're looking for an unlife partner I guess it makes sense.

Even though Drusilla needed Spike, she didn't say no with being intimate/flirting with Angelus and ignoring Spike's feelings. Even though Angelus needed Drusilla, he still allowed her to "feel lonely" enough to need someone else, because of the time he devoted to Darla.

Yeah, demon love...of course Angelus did want to torture Dru and drive her insane. Turning her was sort of a last minute thing.

Well yes and no. Darla's the one that pointed Drusilla out to Angelus in the first place. I got the impression that she was like a gift for him, a way to try something new and thouroghly vile (like the gypsy girl later on). Angelus making Dru miserable insane was part of the game, turning her wasn't- that was all him.
Then Dru did want something of her own- William- so she could be like 'grandmama' and 'daddy' but the emphasis for her was always on family- the four of them, her dolly's or whatever. Up until Angelus became Angel, eventually left, and fractured the group.

I'm always surprised that we didn't see Dru sire more vampires to be part of what she wanted. So then maybe William was unique after all.

Maybe Darla saw Liam as more or less a blank slate that she could use to create exactly the kind of partner/mate/lover/whatever she wanted, like a sculptor sees a lump of fresh clay as literally boundless in its potential.

I seriously doubt that Drusilla wanted to go to the effort of "making" anything beyond a willing and enthusiastic bed partner out of William, but, possibly, she saw a tendency in him to want to be someone's knight in shining armor, unquestioning in his loyalty, faithful, and protective to a fault, the kind of lover whose world seemed focused totally on providing for the pleasure and well being of his lady.

Darla wanted the challenge of creating her ideal partner, sort of a supernatural Hillary/Bill relationship, and Dru simply saw the potential of a ready made champion (note, I said "potential." William was the guy who would dream of being someone's Sir Lancelot) and a lover that she could enjoy whenever the mood struck her.

Angel wanted a bit of variety. You can get a bit bored in a hundred+ years with just one companion.
His explanation to Darla' s question in Dear Boy as why he kept the mad Dru is that he had special plans for her (probably because she was a seer, an unique and useful ability) and wanted to relish her ethernal torment. After all, she was his masterpiece. But still Darla had most of his attention. She was the one that never ceased to surprise him and his true companion. I don't know what he felt about Dru besides her being his and part of the family and ocassional plaything.

Watching season 2 it's almost looks like he is interested more in taunting Spike with Dru than in Dru herself.



As about why Dru sired William, i think she thought it was fate that he bumped into her when she felt lonely and neglected by Angel. She took a closer look at him, liked the potential she saw in him, so she turned him.

I suspect whatever she might have sired, Spike would have dusted once she wandered off. Not too big on competition, and Dru was high maintenance enough.

Angelus, OTH, just slaughtered everyone in his village, and had a great time of it.

Watching season 2 it's almost looks like he is interested more in taunting Spike with Dru than in Dru herself.

No, I mean a young man who probably grew up reading books about people with names like Ulysses, Beowulf, Hercules, Lancelot, Galahad, Roland, and Ogier the Dane, and dreamed of living that kind of life of high adventure rescuing fair maidens in exotic places. A boy who was too small to stand up for himself when the bullies came calling, but big enough to devote his life to caring for a very sick, no doubt dying, mother.

Suddenly, as if by magic, he becomes stronger and more dangerous than any of those bullies, and has a genuine lady fair to protect and love, with not even a pesky conscience to tell him that his lady love is evil, and, rather than a knight, he was a monster.

That kind of a man. The bad poetry was just a bonus.

I think the best part of the whole "His poetry is bloody awful" is that I actually found it quite nice. I think it was demonstrated that William was ahead of his time, as he read this same poem to a bar the last episode of Angel and they enjoyed it. Despite it being a bar and how many possible drunks were in the room.

In a way, Spike was a knight. He just wasn't a "good" knight. He fought for his lady, was loyal to his lady, and served no other. He fought for her or alongside her. He was a romantic at heart and maybe that's what Drusilla needed. Angelus didn't have that. Not to the extent that William did, at least. I just love the face Juliet Landau makes when Drusilla first sees Spike. The excitement, the thrill, it just glows.

In a way, Spike was a knight. He just wasn't a "good" knight. He fought for his lady, was loyal to his lady, and served no other. He fought for her or alongside her. He was a romantic at heart and maybe that's what Drusilla needed.

Right. Spike saw himself as a black knight and Dru as his dark princess. That might even help explain his attachment for Nikki's coat, since he would have seen it as a trophy of combat, just as the knights of old were justified in taking, and using, the weapons, armor, and other valuable of their defeated opponents, and would see no reason whatsoever to return it to Robin unless he had won it in fair combat.

Sounds right . Plus Drusilla was looking for someone to care for her since Angelius & Dara wouldn't so she picked a champion .
And since Drusilla prescient, she knew Spike wouldn't leave her & he didn't.
