Why We Love Angel

Thought we could start a nice positivity thread listing why we love this adorable, broody vampire! I'll kick off with some of my fave reasons to love Angel:
  1. Because he loves Barry Manilow
  2. Because he's ridiculously socially akward
  3. Because he imagines himself dancing like a frog in a blender
  4. Because he loves the feel of freshly-laundered clothes
  5. Because he cried at the ballet (and he was evil!)

Lol, like a frog in a blender!
Because he uses his broodiness as an excuse to be left alone
Because he's a funny guy
Because he doesn't get power walking

His love for Buffy, his capacity for being self-less, he does his best to be the opposite of his evil deeds he did when he was Angelus, he doesn't give up on people since he knows what its like to be evil and has hope that anyone can come back from being evil (like Faith and Darla when she became human) are all traits that I like about Angel.

I like Angel because:

He almost prevented Faith going evil by talking to her (why did the council have to barge in at the worst moment possible ???).

His social awkwardness is relatable.

He's usually a cuddly vampire who doesn't want to harm you, he wants to help you.

Even though he only drinks pig's blood, he always has some coffee available 🙂

He left Sunnydale so that Buffy could move on with her life as Bangel didn't work out.

For me it's...

Because he is one of the most complex characters in the verse to the point where people only see the surface and accept it and label him accordingly without looking deeper. Actually he's the character you have to work the hardest to understand IMO.

Because while in appearance in tries to distance himself as much as possible from his soulless self (changing his name to Angel, etc.), he's not really able to. He does feel responsible for everything his soulless self did. And that's very interesting to me.

Socially inept men are such a turn on (they are, aren't they?).

- He inspires the good in people.
- He's a good dad! Or at least always tries to be.
- His petty jealousy with ex girlfriends and their new lovers is hilarious.
- His arc is one of the most enjoyable in the 'verse, right up until those last words in NFA.
- He created a close bond with those working alongside him; more of a family than the Scoobies ever were.
- He lost a lot. Doyle, his son, Buffy, Darla, Fred, Cordy, but he never gave up.

What I like about Angel is that he wants to do good and fight and makeup for what he did as Angelus. But he also makes mistakes and messes up. But then comes back again.

His sense of humour. It's often over looked because it's quite understated but he comes out with some great lines and has excellent timing and deadpan delivery.
Yea I think Angel has a lot of great comedy. The deadpan is great. And I love when he's being petty and jealous. And the joke about him being cheap. Lol

Yes, I love that he doesn't give up on his people. His relationship with Faith his is great!

I love his relationship with Faith too. It's one of my favorite relationships in the Buffyverse 🙂 Faith is one of my top favorite characters so I'm glad that she was able to come back to being good and have people that care about her a lot like Angel.

I prefer deadpan humor myself. Also so many jokes made at Angel's expense are also funny.

His relationship with Faith his is great!
My fave male/female friendship in the whole verse. All the other big friendships had to turn into weird as all get out romance territory (Willow/Xander, Angel/Cordy).

1. You're a bloody puppet!

I am surprised we don't have a wholesale merchandising effort to sell Angel puppets.

2. Acknowledging that Spike won the cup of sorrows because he wanted it more:

ANGEL
No. He beat me to the cup.

GUNN
You mean the fake cup? The make-believe, fairy-tale cup? So what?!

ANGEL
No, you don't...
(sighs)
He won the fight, Gunn... for the first time. Doesn't matter if the cup is real or not.
(sighs)
In the end, he... Spike was stronger. He wanted it more.

GUNN
Angel, it doesn't mean anything.

ANGEL
What if it does? What if it means that... I'm not the one?

- He's the butt of so many great jokes (about his hair, his clothes, his relationship with Buffy, his general old fashioned-ness)
- He doesn't give up on people and also has a great capacity for forgiveness (Faith, Holtz, Wesley)
- Because he used to date one slayer and is besties with the other one.
- He's Irish
- He takes a lot of showers for a vampire...
- He gives really good speech.
- The whole 'billowy coat, king of pain' thing.
- Because he is NOT a eunuch!

He takes a lot of showers for a vampire...
Lol! I remember him always walking out of the shower! At least he's a clean vampire! I don't think we ever see Spike taking showers, and he lives in a dirty crypt. lol.

And smokes. And wears the same ratty leather coat outfit almost every day.
I don't think Spike even has running water in his crypt so yeah, he must reek. Bleugh.

And yet the only time Buffy ever comments on Spike's smell is in season 7 when Spike is crazy and they use him to track down the Gnarl. Buffy describes Spike's smell as "ripe". Perhaps Joyce let him have showers at the house or Spike uses Febreze to eliminate odours?

OMG yes. It was one of the things that puzzled me in S6. How can Buffy sleep with a guy who must stink like last weeks trash. He always wears the same clothes and he spends his days in a crypt, smoking and drinking. Yuck.

Yay for Angel having different wardrobe and showering a lot.

An aroma would be the product of a metabolism which the undead do not have. Since they do not rot or breathe, they may not stink at all or they may smell like human jerky. Angel may shower to get rid of smells left by living in a sewer whereas Spike in a crypt or the school basement may get a bit moldy but that is the extent of it. Once Angel moves to his own building in Ats, we do not see him do much in the way of hygiene and I wouldn't expect to unless Angel in the shower was a plot point. We see Willow crying in the shower after giving up her innocence to Rack and we see a very bruised Faith in the shower after fighting the Beast because they are plot points. We see Buffy about to get in the shower in Seeing Red because it is a critical plot point. We see 30 girls trying to share one bathroom in Buffy's place (which may be the real reason she decided to leave).
