And the Sabrina writer who was pregnant who said both Joss and David Greenwalt made fun of her?
The whole Firefly thing was done in front of a group of people so I would be very easy to disprove if it wasn't true. All it would take for 1 of those alleged to be there to say Nope it didn't happen.
Now just for the record I think Joss should be uncancelled and thought this Buffy reboot was never going to work without him (its his character) and Buffy was always a writers show rather than a Director or actress show, hell Im not even sure it would've worked even with Joss, these reboots always fail!, but leaving all that aside I think its crazy to pretend he wasn't a dick on set or is a bit of a narcissist. That Vulture Interview showed that. The amount of cast members that came foward. I mean its not just 1 or 2
Plus 15 hrs nights is an insane work load no matter what job your in.
Yeah again it's possible some of the stories are not true, but very unlikely all of them are, and given they span pretty much his entire career from Buffy to Firefly to DC yeah it all paints the same picture.
He clearly has his issues or else he wouldn't have gone to therapy, but again as you say he didn't kill anyone, so if he has changed he should be given another chance. Why waste his talent?
I've said this before but a very interesting parallel can be drawn between Joss Whedon and John Nathan Turned, the producer of Doctor Who in the 80s.
For those of you who don't know, JNT initially started as a hero among fandom during his stint on DW in the early-mid 80s. He helped the show finally become huge in America, revived its status as a cool, edgy, spooky show in Britain after it had become a bit of a light hearted comedy show, and at first by all accounts he was easy to work with and beloved by his cast. He also was more generous to fans in terms of granting them interviews, going to conventions, and he was also a massive who fan as a boy so he felt like one of us.
However sadly all of this led to him losing his head and becoming a tyrant on set. He would do pretty much ALL of the same shitty things Joss did.
He played favourites with the cast and could be a bully to those he disliked. Sophie Aldred who played Ace he took a disliking too when she asked him to stop smoking and said she wanted to do another publicity shot as she thought she looked awful. He responded to the former by lighting up a cigarette and blowing it in her face and the latter by telling her "who the **** do you think you are? Elizabeth Taylor". He'd also do things like say goodbye to everybody but Sophie on set and joke about replacing the companion all of which upset Sophie. She said she'd come home in tears worrying about her job.
Fortunately he and Sophie did make it up by the end of her first season and became lifelong friends after unlike Charisma, but it does show you how producers can be cliquey and abuse their power.
JNT also shagged about with the fans. Literally the only difference is he was gay so it was male fans LOL, but same dynamic. Fanboys, people who worked on the show, etc he had his way with 100s of them, just like Joss did with the fan girls. There is even the same story about them shagging a fan whilst talking to someone else! In Joss's case it was when he was talking to a writer and she left, whilst JNT he was on the phone to a reporter whilst shagging someone under the desk. The reporter later said "John sounded out of breath."
Both also went made and tried to blacklist people from the show over petty grievances.
Both also became caricatures of their former selves as the more self indulgent they became, the fewer people were willing to say no to them because of what tyrants they were.
Both even went through a similar dip with Trial of a Time Lord and Angel season 4 being season long arcs that don't go anywhere, and in both cases one of the leads was made the fall guy and fired (Charisma and Colin Baker, though JNT was less to blame with Colin, the way he handled it was pretty bad, as he phoned Colin and said "I have some good news and bad news. The good news is that DW will continue for another season and the bad news is you won't be the Doctor". LOL again to be fair he and Colin remained friends. I don't think JNT was being malicious, more just socially inept but still.
However both got a bit of a knock after their empire crumbled, (in Joss's case Angel being axed in season 4, Firefly being cancelled, in JNT's the 1985 hiatus.) So both stopped being as self indulgent and the next eras, the McCoy era and Angel season 5 were among the best either series ever produced and ended it on a high.
Sadly however in both cases all the enemies they made along the way came out with venomous stories about his behavior and the fans turned on them and made them both pariahs and both were basically blacklisted and never worked again, with JNT drinking himself to death.
Obviously Joss's fall was bigger as he was a lot bigger, but it is worth mentioning that in both cases whilst JNT and Joss clearly had emotional issues and can't be absolved, the fans did create the toxic atmosphere that brought out the worst side in them, which again is why we should avoid that happening again.
