Nicholas Brendon, ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ Star, Dies at 54

I was very sad to hear of Nicholas' passing....I've started rewatching Buffy again, and while Xander was undoubtedly a problematic character sometimes, he could also be sweet and hilarious. I didn't know Nicholas personally, but I understand he had his own demons and it's awful that he's died so young. I did have a couple of interactions with him on social media some years ago and he was very nice to me. I hope he's at peace now. RIP. 👏♥️

I didn't want him to die and I feel for his family but I don't see why his actions and what happened to his victims should be brushed under the rug simply because he played a character in a TV show we liked
Let me be clear, I am not trying to "brush under the rug" Nick's actions, or discredit his victims in anyway. There is no excuse for domestic violence. I'm simply saying that we can still be empathetic and realize that addiction makes people do awful things.

Okay but to be fair he literally strangled multiple women. We need to take that into account, but all I really care about is his family and other people affected.

I’m glad to know it was natural and it wasn’t any substance overdose. Because for a while there it was questionable. It’s a shame that his life became like that at the end.

After Buffy, I loved him as Penelope’s boyfriend in Criminal Minds. But I’m glad he had multiple successful projects that we can remember him through.

I just learned this the other day believe it or not and felt really gutted . Such a sad life with what he endured as a kid with the music teacher. as a csa survivor i felt it in my bones. RIP beautiful soul

He was an abuser himself. Multiple counts of which he pleaded guilty in court regards what he did to his Ex. He was a damaged soul but he was not beautful, let's not sanitize him.

These are 2 but there were more
Brendon was arrested in Saratoga Springs, New York in October 2015 for strangling his girlfriend in a hotel room. He was charged with felony third-degree robbery, criminal mischief, and obstruction of breathing.[49][50] Brendon pleaded guilty to criminal mischief, a misdemeanor. His plea deal provided that he would avoid a custodial sentence if he completed drug and alcohol counseling and one year of probation.[51] He subsequently entered a 90-day residential treatment program in California.[52]

In October 2017, Brendon was arrested in California for assaulting another girlfriend.[53] He was charged with felony corporal injury to a spouse[54] in April 2019 and pleaded not guilty a month later.[55] He later agreed to a plea deal to avoid a potential four-year prison sentence for felony domestic violence and violating active protective orders issued by two states. On February 28, 2020, he was sentenced to three years of probation, 20 hours of community service, and a 52-week domestic violence course.[56]

Never and i mean never lay your hands on anyone, i hate abusers.
i now have mixed feelings about his passing. at first very upset and shocked, then i read about how he was grooming a young woman. ik he was a survivor but there is no excuse for that. i saw his dr phil show, that was awful. i hope his victim found peace . the thread i saw about him alleged a lot of horrible behaviour on his part. what is true and what is not, i dont know. ultimately i will just appreciate his work on buffy.

My quote I pulled from Wiki. He strangled his ex girlfriend (which he pleaded guilty too). The Trial was in 2017 which was when the Buffy Reunion was happening, so Im guessing DB or other cast members didn't want to have pictures with a guy going through that at the time.
He then was arrested for beating up another girlfriend straight after this.
Im sorry but the guy was violent. If he hadn't have starred in Buffy, no one would be giving him the time of day

Nicholas was an known addict, who was struggling with sobriety, and many of his relaspes were tied to fan conventions. Addiction is tricky matter, addicts are personally responsible for what they do, but you know it's not entirely their fault, either. You want they to get the help they need, and to stay sober, and he wants that too, but you know he's going to OD in six months and another intervention. His struggle is over, and it's best to let the dead rest in peace.

well said, @AlphaFoxtrot as a recovering addict, I've watched many addicts relapse and relapse and relapse. We are responsible for our acts, but sadly, once we are using, we're often not in our right minds. I don't want to rehash Nick horrible.
I will always feel sad for Nick. While he was alive, any crime he perpetrated should have been punished properly and his victims have my sympathy and my empathy and should have been fairly compensated.

I find it interesting that even though he was arrested several times, his time in jail appears to be minimal. Was this a good lawyer and insufficient consequences for domestic abusers? I'm sure that's possible. However, it is also possible that the episodes did not rise to the level where he earned proper prison time. We know celebrities go to prison. Some aren't even violent. Perhaps the authorities saw a lot of his actions as the general crazy of addicts. Worthy of consequences, but not the level of consequences some seem to be crying for after the fact.

He's dead. He is post punishment of any kind. His life is a matter of public record. It is interesting that few of his victims/complainants have come out of the woodwork to 'tell all' since his death. Maybe they know more than we do? However, if they're not coming out of the woodwork to lambast him, I find that interesting. He has no power to hurt them in any way now. He has very little by way of a legacy to protect. Yet, his exes aren't out there saying terrible things.

Yes, there was definitely a need for him to be prevented from hurting others and I have no sympathy with his behaviour. I do, however, have a great deal of empathy for the man and the addict. As a recovering addict, i know the road is not straight. Even those of us who don't relapse, struggle with the inner demons from our disease, from our childhoods, from our consequences. It's not easy even after decades in recovery.

As he is now dead, I really see no point in rehashing his every flaw, misdeed, crime and other horribles. It won't undo his bad actions. It won't help his victims. We don't have to prove that we're fairly punishing the bad guy, every time he's mentioned in the neutral and the positive. ALL of him is true. Good. Bad. Vile.

I see no point in punishing the dead. It won't fix anything. It won't hurt the person. Mostly, those efforts end up punishing those of us who dare to care about 'the horrible worthless crime machine.' Sometimes, it rises to the level of an emotional assault.

Some of us want to remember the man we loved. yes, loved. From a distance, and as fans, but the fact we're talking about Nick, about ASH, about Michelle, and some of us even talking about Glenn and Andy -- means that for many of us -- these people touched us. We're sad they died.

For someone whose life was tragic and messed up, it actually hurts a bit more. I personally think there's a lot of his life story that we do not know... and some of what we know (not his crimes, but some of what was done TO HIM) contributes to my willingness to continue to care about him.

As a survivor of an abusive marriage, I know it is a complicated place. Bad stuff happens to the victim in that marriage. I don't (and won't) absolve anyone who commits such crimes of their consequences. I know some of those abusers have no interest in change (and i think those belong separated from society in a permanent way) and I know some of them struggle with themselves and fail. the consequences to the victim are still real, even if the person 'didn't mean to go there'.

I have also dealt with people who have done violent things, who have learned from their actions and sought help. I actually watched one particular person grow into a decent human after struggling with a violent temper... This person (like I think Nick was) was an addict and a survivor of some horrible home life stuff. They never learned coping strategies. In recovery, they kept fighting with themselves, and eventually overcame. I wish that Nick had gotten there. I am not sure how much horrible Nick did in the last few years of his life when he seemed to be barely ambulatory, but I saw that he struggled in every aspect of his life... physical health, mental health, addiction and just functioning in the world. He did not live his best dreams. May well have lived in his own version of purgatory... No career. No family life. Very little respect in the world. Bad health. His life was a tragedy.

I choose to be gentle with his memory.

Just my few cents,

A recovering addict and domestic and child abuse survivor.
