Reboot Still Happening

If they go ahead with it, doubtful SMG is going to be a lead.

No Spike, no Angel because the actors playing them aren't immortal. No Anya. Eliza I don't think is acting anymore? So no Faith.
I'm guessing Xander won't be around. Please God, I don't want to see Andrew.

Would ASH be interested? If you can't get Alyson or Michelle on board either, then you don't have much.

Those who would be interested in participating are, more than likely, those who appeared in Slayers. And, if they're trying to play younger people, would need extensive CGI. You can get around that with everyone but Spike and Angel, by setting it at a time when they are the age they are, but Spike and Angel as ageless vampires need to be, well, ageless.

Eliza married a billionaire and stopped working (okay, that is possibly poorly phrased!) so yes, no Faith. Slayers also showed how you can get the dead to appear again, by having them be from an alternate universe, which allowed the return of Cordelia, Anya, Jonathan and Tara.

Exactly. And I loathe these ideas being thrown around that having a soul might 'age' vamps. Now really, the only legitimate excuse you might have is if someone fulfilled the Shansu prophecy. Of course, you'll have Spuffy stans wailing if it ends up being Angel.

Yes, true on the alternate universe in order to bring people back. Eliza I don't blame for leaving the industry, considering what she went through.

Also, if JW isn't attached to this project that might entice SMG, Emma, Amber etc to consider the project.

If any. I don't think we should take SMG's words too seriously. It gets people worked up over a throw-away line. Also, I can imagine that DB is out there now somewhere fielding questions of Angel coming back. 😂

I think they should just be ignored. I get the feeling that though they are very vocal, they are only a minority of the fanbase.

Now, my only real objection to the idea of Spuffy is one I think you mentioned; that having another vampire "in love" with Buffy took the series backwards. It is the execution I have issue with; if I have ever encountered a worse "relationship" it was obviously so awful I have managed to completely block it from my memory. It is entirely possible to have Spuffy be a loving, healthy relationship. I strongly suspect, though, that there is a percentage of Spuffy fans who don't want a healthy relationship, that it's the toxicity and abuse (and JM's cheekbones! 😀 ) that they like.

I think I missed whatever that was.

That was the case with Slayers and I think if it hadn't been cancelled, SMG might have been convinced to reprise her role.

Well, look what happened during the show's original run...

I'm not open to the idea at all. I wasn't on board with the unhealthy "relationship", and I wasn't on board with whatever "relationship" s7 was.

As I understand it in the comics (because I don't read them, but saw a blurb about it in passing) - they were together for a bit, but split because they realised that outside of fighting evil forces, they had nothing in common.

I strongly suspect, though, that there is a percentage of Spuffy fans who don't want a healthy relationship, that it's the toxicity and abuse (and JM's cheekbones! 😀 ) that they like.
Well, you have fans who reference how "hot" the balcony scene was in s6, where one might call that rape.

I think I missed whatever that was.
She's had some very tough experiences on sets. I don't know if this is place to get into it, but you can always for a quick reference look up her Wiki page and have a read.

I think DB coming on board would've sealed the deal for her.

S7 was still an unhealthy relationship. It might have been a different kind of unhealthy, but it was still unhealthy. Spike's S7 behaviour towards Buffy can be found on lists of "How to tell if you are in a relationship with a narcissist." But yes, I would prefer something other than another vampire. Been there, done that.

I think DB coming on board would've sealed the deal for her.

Especially as SMG and Emma seem to be good friends.

Team Briley!! 😉
You are correct though, s7 was also an unhealthy relationship. I believe @NoShip referred to it as a codependent one?

Hearing them together again would've been great!

Wake me up when money changes hands.

So far, I have not heard of anyone writing a pilot for the new Buffy because that would cost money. A showrunner may have been named, but that doesn't cost any money. Based on the limited sale of comics about Buffy, I doubt you could rebuild the embers of Buffy series popularity into the inferno of a new production. If I were an executive tasked to make a choice of whether to buy up a new Buffy series, I would probably say no because the Buffy fans are all here on this forum and in the Hollywood scheme of things, we are thin on the ground.

I doubt you could (or should) get any of the original series cast to appear and a new series would always be subject to comparison with the original series. My guess is that a new Buffy series would last one season. This forum would make room for it but as well as the original cast having moved on, the public has probably moved on as well.

The fact that no one has invested the money required to write a pilot script says that this project is dead. And I mean, really dead, not about to climb out if its grave.

Unfortunately, I think you, and your reasoning, are spot on and inarguable.

I agree with this
I don't see SMG and JW working together ever again. First, SMG has no trust in JW at all - stories or personal character or how he runs his shows - so I think she will demand limits on JW's behavior and "creativity" that he would never agree to. Second, having read Whedon's response to the claims against him, there is no basis to think he sees a need to change because he thinks be was right.

If the show is done like a spinoff set in 2025, has great writing and actors, and, lots of support from the network and studio, I think it will be great. If the show is a straight up reboot, I think it will fail miserably.

Having said the above, whatever is presented, I will watch at least the first few episodes to see if I like it.

Exactly. When CC spoke out in 2021, SMG said something along the lines of: "I'm happy to associated with Buffy, but don't want to be associated with the name JW".

To be fair there's been no new Buffy content for 22 years, excluding the comics but that's a different medium that some people won't engage with in the first place, I've never considered the comics canon even though they're officially canon.

My guess is that the comic book manufacturers demanded that Joss tell people they were canon a condition of the agreement to buy the IP. It cost nothing for Joss to say they were canon even though anyone can see that this was very unlikely to be the case. I have never considered them to be canon, either.

In the constraints of TV, season 8 would have never happened. Likely, the “Seed” would have been more metaphorical, but I do see seasons 9-12 as being possible. An interesting revival plot line would be if Magic did cease because of Willow’s spell (or an inciting incident if it were made today) and having to deal with the repercussions. The storylines in those comics seasons easily could blend into television.

But I agree. They aren’t televised canon, so I don’t consider them canon. Though I loved the Billy character, and as a gay man who always wanted to be a slayer, I appreciate that the writers, like Jane Espenson, recognized this community that adopted Buffy as a representation for queer television (it was even syndicated on Logo, a queer tv channel in the states).

Re: Season 8; Eh, Dark Horse already had the Buffy License, and Joss was a fairly good comic book writer at the time. My guess, is that Season 8 was a good way of revitalizing the line after running out of material to work with, and a good way of monetizing all the various plot ideas generated from the various failed Buffy spinoff. But I really don't think it represented some master plan for the property, just some new ideas for the comic's regular editors to work with.

I remember (unfortunately I can't say from what) Whedon saying that TV S8 would be nothing like Comics S8 and he was ok with that. So, the comics were always only "canon" until something better came along. Also, given how Disney treated the Star Wars Extended Universe, if BTVS is ever remade, the "canon" comics are not long for this world.

TLDR, I totally agree with @Ethan Reigns.

Nobody knows what to do with characters aging. I remember Picard season 2 having Guinan played by Whoopie, which is fine…until you consider that Guinan is supposed to be like quasi-immortal and looked exactly the same in TNG as she did in a flashback bit hundreds upon hundreds of years prior.

Their solution was to say that she “decided to look old” because it “makes humans more comfortable”. If Spike and or Angel come back, 100% expect a similar “they decided to age because that’s a thing they can do I guess” line.

They were already looking old even on the show. Watching Angel Season 5 and Spike looks like a middle aged man whose a Matrix fan. While Angel clearly looks nothing like how he was in Buffy S1

People need to be careful what they wish for when it comes to a reboot. Yeah you can a hack like JJ Abrams (complete with shakey cam and lens flares) to do a rehash like he did with Star Trek and Starwars but those are normally completely soulless and never stand the test of time or rewatch. Do you really want that for a show you love ?

Not really. I want more original IPs, honestly.

I was watching the big “Game Awards” show and all the crazy announcements they have every year, and pretty much every single one was a sequel to an existing IP or a “spiritual successor”. Media needs to stop trying to remind people of how good nostalgic properties are and try to create new ones

So, the reboot is still all go. If and when it happens, then good but until then it'll be a case of if, but and maybe.
Why not have old blokes or gals portray themselves as young blokes or girls? That is what we have AI, CGI and wishful thinking for, so who cares if it takes another 20 years or so -
maybe J. J. Abrams or those of the crew do.

Q./
Can a stake or a cross bow still look bloody old?
